wonderful guide to those who love romantic gardens

I am not as expert as the first reviewer but can only say after checking this out of my local library I had to own a copy to plan and dream of a future trip to Italy and visit just a few of these gorgeous gardens. What I really love is that in the back of the book each garden is located on a map and hours/dates of opening is given, along with address and telephone number. What a wonderful resource.

And if I never get to visit I can use some of the style in my own small garden. Perhaps a lemon tree in a pot or a rose growing into a tree.

Of course a book could be written and lavishly photographed from almost each of the major gardens included but I'm glad for this compendium as it is.

Beautifully illustrated

Sixty gardens is of course a personal selection of gardens by the author. And I miss quite a few of historic and design-wise interesting places. Le Marche is not represented at all and Villa Barbarigo is also missing, along with some smaller, but exquisite gardens scattered over the peninsula. That said, the photos are great and most of the more famous places are well illustrated. The text is not that of a deep-probing and exploring academic, it's simply describing the place with some impressions and a few facts well known from previously published books. The best book on the subject is still Georgina Massons 'Italian Gardens' from the 1950's. Very strange...

Stimulating text as well as pictures

The references in the foreword to the writings of Pliny the Younger on the philosophical objectives of an Italian garden were useful, and their application in later Medici villa renaissance gardens. The book inspires one to actually get on and realize the developments one has been toying with for years.

Here she shares the early inspiration that inspired a career in design, and how another artist brought her vision to life.

I grew up loving picture books.

I can still hear my grandmother's voice over the sound of the pages turning, the old wind-up Westclox alarm clock ticking away and the sound of traffic rolling down Howard Street. I remember the smell of books mingling with the smell of freshly laundered sheets.

Virginia Lee Burton's The Little House was my favorite, and I obsessed over the whimsically sweet illustrations of that little pink house happily sitting upon a hill covered in daisies.

Inspired, I wanted to be an artist. I also wanted to be a poet, an art teacher, and a journalist. The ping-pong ball of art vs. words ended with a career as a graphic designer. It was a perfect fit: I took pictures and words and put them together in a pretty way.

I met an artist, a photographer. He also had grown up with Virginia Burton: Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel. It was a sign. So I married him. We had two boys and two good excuses for buying dozens (and dozens) of picture books.

Inspired by my youngest son's tireless (literally!) obsession with trucks, I wrote Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site in stolen moments during the workday and late at night, after the boys were tucked in. And with the words emerged a vision (dare I say "obsession") for how the book and my trucks would look.

I could see it so clearly: realistic illustrations of trucks superimposed with facial expressions to convey the mood and create the characters. Strong, yet simple graphic elements to create the setting. A bit of realism. A bit of collage. A bit of a grunge to compliment the dirty work of the trucks. I included the concept illustration with my manuscript and sent it, unsolicited, to Chronicle Books.

When my editor contacted me, three months after I'd sent the manuscript, she was friendly, but also to-the-point: They loved the manuscript (!), and hated (though she used a nicer word) the illustration concept.

Hmm...

One of the reasons that Chronicle was the first (and ultimately only) publisher on my list was that I LOVE their picture books. I appreciate their beauty and high production values. So, I had a choice here: trust, or walk away. I chose trust--with a big dash of fear.

My editor asked if I had any ideas for illustrators. I sent her a dozen names and online portfolios. I'm pretty certain she ignored me. And, they chose Tom Lichtenheld. (Who?)

When I told my editor that I'd never heard of Tom, she quickly emailed a few examples. The first was from Tom's NYT best-selling book, Duck! Rabbit! I was stunned to see bold, simple shapes and thickly-outlined illustrations. I stared blankly at the screen, feeling my heart sink.

Could this guy even draw a truck?

I spent the next couple of months intently focused on the process of editing and developing the final manuscript. But it was always there, in the back of my mind: What would the book look like? What had I given up?

One evening I received an excited email from my editor with Tom's first pencil sketch attached.

I wrote back: "I’m scared. I'll pour a glass of wine and then look at it."

I held my breath and double-clicked. And there it was: classic, timeless and tender, with just a touch of whimsy. My crane truck, a distant, younger cousin to Mike Mulligan, perhaps? My heart melted. I was won over.

So there it was: nothing like I imagined. But it was better. I've come to learn that some of the best things in life--like marriage and motherhood--are like that.

And I could almost feel Mrs. Burton smiling down.

About the Author
John Dole is a professor with the department of horticultural science at North Carolina State University. John has served as southern region director, treasurer, and executive advisor of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG). He also co-coordinates the national ASCFG trial programs, which evaluate new annual, perennial and woody cut species. He has written hundreds of trade journal articles, scientific journal articles, and book chapters, as well as several other books. In 2000 he received the ASCFG's Allan Armitage Award.

Lane Greer received her PhD from North Carolina State University and taught at Mississippi State University. She honed her sustainable agriculture skills at the national sustainable agriculture information service (ATTRA) providing information to growers around the country on production and marketing of ornamentals. Simultaneously, she owned a cut flower farm, raising an acre of annuals, perennials, and woody shrubs. Her research has focused on the production and vase life of cut flowers. She has written over a hundred articles for publication in trade literature and on Web sites.

Wow!

This has been an excellent resource for me, a beginner, entertaining the idea of marketing woody ornamentals. The authors have shared a lot of detailed information from their years of experience and other growers of woodies. I love the sections "Why You Should Grow It" and "Why You Shouldn't" . Also the Quick Guide in the back and Other Resources - invaluable. I would highly recommend this book to others like me who are just starting out to grow and market woody ornamentals. With the initial investment of time and money in planting trees and shrubs and having to wait a few years before making a profit, one cannot afford to make many mistakes. So why not rely on these seasoned experts. Reading the book is like having the authors as distant mentors.

Published in honor of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations' Declaration of Human Rights, this bilingual volume makes available two of Agosin's out-of-print works: Zones of Pain (1988), and Circle of Madness: Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (1992). These and 16 new poems pay homage to "the spirits of the disappeared," mothers and children "immersed in silence" in Chile and El Salvador, and the Holocaust, "in the country of the dead." A prolific poet (Dear Anne Frank, LJ 3/15/98), Agosin has also edited collections by Hispanic women writers. Her graphic, psalmlike poetry, with deep empathy for the torture of political prisoners and women, chronicles a postmodern anatomy of grief. As mothers search for lost family members in "zones of pain," these emotional poems mourn the "nameless" dead where there is no "sanctuary in the truth." A passionate voice for human rights

"An Absence of Shadows," by Marjorie Agosin, is a significant volume by this important Chilean author. "Absence" contains the texts of two previously published volumes (1988's "Zones of Pain" and 1992's "Circles of Madness"), together with new work. The poems have been translated into English by Celeste Kostopulos-Cooperman, Cola Franzen, and Mary G. Berg. The book is presented in bilingual format, with the Spanish originals and English versions on facing pages.
In her preface, Agosin explains that this book commemorates the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. Agosin notes in the preface that poets "have become the voices that ask for compassion for the voiceless victims. They see beauty amidst the horror and find the courage to speak against injustice." The poems in this book exemplify this mission.
Some of the most striking selections in this book include "The Obedient Girl," about a girl who encounters the general who tortured her family; "The President," a bitter satire of military dictatorship; "El Salvador," the story of a Jewish woman from that troubled nation; and "Anne Frank and Us," in which the speaker notes that the iconic title figure "visits me often." I recommend this book to those interested in women's studies, Latin American literature, Spanish language poetry, or human rights issues.
