About the Author
The Rev. Father Adolphe Tanquerey, S.S. and D.D., was born in 1854 at Blainville, France. At the age of eighteen, he became a seminarian and joined the Society of St. Sulpice, harboring a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ and the Blessed Mother. In 1878 he was ordained a priest, and thereafter began a career of teaching, which he had a clear gift for. His famous theological works include the three-volume Synopsis Theologiae Dogmaticae and comprehensive The Spiritual Life, the latter of which was published circa 1930 by Desclee and Company, Tournai, with the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur. Father Tanquerey died on the twenty-first of February, 1932.

Great book for those interested in a deeper meaning to the spiritual life

As a Catholic laity this is a wonderful source of information regarding the spiritual life for intermediate or advanced readers. If you are interested in a work for beginners, I suggest Ralph Martin's "The Fulfillment of All Desire." "The Spiritual Life" contains information intentionally meant for priests and spiritual leaders; however, any lay Catholic serious about entertaining a more advanced approach to spirituality will find this book to be great. I especially like the practicality of the text that can be used for one's own spiritual growth. As a psychology student I find this work incredibly beneficial to my own academic interests; the connection between asceticism and understanding the human psyche is very strong. For those interested in advancing their knowledge in the spiritual life this book is for you! If you are a priest or religious, I strongly encourage this book to be part of your library - it is very good!

Overall it is heavy reading, but a must for all those that want to grow in faith and fight temptations and human failings of all kinds, I would not recommend it to those who do not want to change or work toward their salvation.

Tanqueray provides a brilliant handbook on the spiritual life, the nature of the soul and what is necessary to advance in union with God. Very enlightening and inspiring. Answers many questions and provides a great deal of light on many aspects of the interior life.

Absolutely Amazing!

These tales are definitely sinister, but in the best way possible. So many of the tales are connected, and have amazing plot twists. Each tale keeps you on your toes Furthermore, each and every tale differs from the next, so it never gets boring. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes the horror genre!

Future potential, just not this book

I've developed an affection for short stories as of late, especially in the horror genre. I blame re-reading Stephen King, for this, a true master at both long novels and short stories. So when I find a new collection, even by a new author, regardless of some of the previous reviews, I give them a try. Which brings me to this book.

I read this book and actually waited awhile before I sat down to write this review. I was all set to give a much lower rating, when I happened upon the authors biography. After reading that, and finding out how young she is, I changed my review.

This is not a bad collection of short stories. In fact I see great potential in this author. I think that as she get a little older, has more life experience as well as writing experience, we will see some really good stuff......just not this book. I will say that for the most part, the stories kept my interest. And I did finish the book, although I almost didn't. I don't want this review to either discourage potential readers, because it is interesting. I also don't want the author to think that I'm criticizing her, because as I said, I think she has talent. I do hope to read future books, although I might wait awhile before I read her next one.

I would love this book, truly. I didn't realize it was a young YA book, and I mean young, when I downloaded it. Plenty of gore, plenty of scary things that go (literally) bump in the night, and plenty of ideas that will keep you awake at night.

Another Gem from the Quaker Prairie Sage

Richard Foster: Money, Sex & Power

In many families--especially Christian ones--these are three often-taboo topics. That was certainly the case with me; my parents squirmed at discussing how much mom or dad made, where babies came from, and the uncomfortable realities of how things worked in the world of business and politics. All of that makes it all the more necessary for people of faith to have an informed and thoughtful perspective on these three critical areas of life. As in the other book of his that I've read (Celebration of Discipline, also excellent), Foster handles his subject matter with a combination of Biblical perspective, wisdom from the greats of the Christian tradition across the centuries, common sense, and a dash of humor.

What I continually appreciate about Foster's work is the over-arching message that the Christian life can be both committed and joyful, serious and full. As with Celebration of Discipline, this book provided extensive food for reflection and merited exhaustive note-taking (I filled page after page in my Moleskine with quotations too good to forget).

An aspect of Foster's writing which deserves further comment is his deep roots in the Christian tradition, whether quoting from early Quaker greats, the Church fathers, or founders of various monastic fellowships. Furthermore, his call to the vows of simplicity, fidelity, and service feels wisely and bracingly counter-cultural in a time when even many spiritual books have soft, affirming, back-patting messages. I highly recommend the book for any Christian seeking a solid spiritual meal.

I'm a car guy and it was meh...

I enjoyed the book enough. Paul Ingrassia wrote an interesting enough book and said from the beginning that it was his opinion of what the 15 most important cars have been to the United States. The only problem was that it turned more into a book about the 15 most important makes to the United States than it was about the models. I understand that models often influence the make as a whole (remember the Ford tagline from a few years ago that a single car "could be the pace car for an entire company"?) but I think the way Ingrassia went about weaving this together went a little too far.

The chapter on the BMW 2002 as an example, started with the problems BMW faced in the aftermath of WWII, got to the introduction of the 2002, then followed into the heyday of the 3-series and the yuppies and yuppie psychology. Really? He had a longer discussion of some of the BMW snobbery than he did of the car itself. There is a chapter on the ford truck which brings in discussions of everybody else's trucks. The Honda Accord's chapter talked more too about the manufacturer's range and history than the model. While the subtitle of the book is "A History of the American Dream in Fifteen Cars," I think he could have made the subtitle more about the makes and been more accurate and maybe have then put the story together a little more coherently than what emerged. Finally, as another reviewer noted, there are few errors in the book but I can't recall them now that I am reviewing this about a month after reading; they were not overly glaring and will only be noticed by those who are car crazy themselves.

I did like the book well enough in the end--I am a car guy after all. It is well written for what it is and I will admit to learning a few things through my read.

I had read this book some time ago and recently purchased the audio book because I enjoyed it so much. It is not as good as his other book, Crash Course: The American Automobiles... but entertaining, nonetheless. Sometimes he reminisces too much about songs and TV shows from the era of the car he is discussing, but that is a minor complaint. If you are a car enthusiast, you will enjoy this book. If you hate cars or find them boring, you would not be reading this review in the first place:)

Engines of Change is an OK book. It has more details about 15 cars like the Mustang, Prius, and Cadillacs than you would ever want. For example, did the readers really need to know about the Prius being the featured car on Curb Your Enthusiasm or a funny South Park episode? I think the book was good, but you get bogged down in minutiae and you just feel sick. I agree with the other reviewer that said basically that he tries too hard to be cutesy with his titles and humor (example "From Hitler to Hippies"....and "Baby Boomers become Soccer Moms and a, um, Driving Force in American Politics." The strength of this book is that it is a unique concept: a history book that contains 15 vehicles that shaped American history. The problem is the minute details and just "over doing it" when it comes explaining the stories circling these cars. Just give me the stories without all the BS and I will be happy.
