This thing is so dense its nearly incomprehensible. Also it's supposed to be a Russia only version and is illegal to sell to people in the US. It's in English and is the correct text, just is a s***ty text book to begin with.

1100 pages of terriffic information

I am new to server side programming, and relatively new to Java. This book is packed with great information, even for me. Three chapters into the book I couldn't wait to get started, and I was already equipped with enough information to write basic server side programs. Some of the things that I found most valuable: Information on how to configure some of the more popular web servers to run Java Servlets; An explanation of HTTP; The pros and cons of CGI, JavaServer Pages, Active Server Pages, and Java Servlets; Detailed information about the Java Servlet API.
It does not contain a lot of information about Java programming in general (syntax, general API info, etc., ) so if you are new to Java you will need a Java API book to supplement.

*) Covers a lot of ground on up to date (01/2000) server side tech, Servlets, JSP, RMI, XML, EJB, JINI, CORBA, JNDI, LDAP, JDBC, Mime, cookies, Internationalization.
*) Lots of hands-on details with many examples.
*) Very fluent and usually clear.
Con:
*) Very little on theory, concepts, server architecture using these technologies or trends, goes straight to the details.
*) Many exercises don't work without some hacking (they could still fix it, the code is on their site).
*) So much is about Java Servlets you would think Sun published it.
*) Not all the chapters are in the same level, you can feel many people wrote the book.

Outstanding Book

This book is outstanding! It covers the new features of JSDK2.1 wonderfully. It introduces JSP and other J2EE features. I recommend this book to all current Java Server programmers and to all who want to learn about Java Server Programming. The depth is wonderful and the examples are very good. The only knock is that it is expensive and you don't get a CD. However, there is a web site to download the source code, nice touch Wrox Press! Even though the book is expensive it is well worth the money! Knowing what I know now, I still would buy it again. But this time I would by it through Amazon so I get a discount. :-) Note, I paid full price and still think I got a great deal.

Well, it's...different.

Having been a phan for over a decade, I enjoy reading other authors' spins on the timeless story of Erik. This book was interesting. It's not the worst POTO spin-off I've read, but not the best, either.

The book follows Leroux more than anything, but there are some major adjustments to the story. Raoul is very likeable (I found it very difficult not to want him to end up with Christine!), very smart, and isn't so childish and petty as he is in Leroux. Christine isn't as naive as she was in Leroux, although she's still fairly gullible. Philippe, Raoul's brother, encourages Raoul to pursue a serious relationship with Christine, is happily married, and is actually funny and warm. And Erik is insane - as in literally mood-swings-that-make-you-dizzy-just-reading-about-them, stark-raving-mad, insane. Erik spends much of his time running around and jumping up and down like a little boy, laughing maniacally, and trying to kill people who get in his way. The time frame is also a bit different - the story is set in 1888 (which explains the mention of the Eiffel Tower in the book, as construction started in 1887).

The biggest disappointment I had with this book was the ending. I won't give it away - but let's just say that the beatiful themes of redemption and undying love that are found in Leroux's book just aren't in Bischoff's tale. Leroux's Erik is so complex - a genius, a madman, a murderer, a composer, and so much more - and I cannot help but feel empathy for him. Bischoff's Erik, however, is rather flat in comparison. I laughed at some of his antics, but I didn't feel a connection with the character at all.

I think your level of enjoyment of this book depends on what you are looking for in a Phantom story. If you're looking for a romantic Erik, definitely skip this book. If you're looking for a story of redemption, this isn't the book for you. If you're searching for a faithful retelling of Leroux, steer clear. But if you're looking for an Erik that is insane, if you're looking to laugh a bit, or if you are a huge phan and must have every book ever written about Erik, well, you might enjoy this.

Very...interesting

This is the type of 'Phantom' novel you either like or you hate. It is definately not a copy of the Leroux version, that's for sure. Erik doesn't get very much page space until the end of the book and he is written as being somewhat more...hyperactive than the other versions. The storyline deviates very drastically from the Leroux version and it's not a book for die-hard purists out there. In this version Christine and Raoul have never met before, until the night when she made her debut. Christine has never met Erik face-to-mask either before he takes her down to his lair after kidnapping her from the stage. He then acts somewhat bi-polar and more of a madman than the feel you get from the others. Raoul ends up meeting up with the Persian as in the Leroux novel, but he and Erik aren't as friendly with one another as they were in the Leroux novel or the Susan Kay novel. They really didn't seem much more than aquaintances. Erik's backstory was delved into more in this, though, not nearly as much as in the Susan Kay version. The ending is not at all close to the original novel, save the inclusion of the scorpion and the grasshopper. Also a slight twist...but that's all I can say without giving the book away.
I'd recommend it to obsessed phans as a must-read. I myself found it very enjoyable and thought that Erik was adorable, but that's just me.
One little thing that I thought was humorous, but that could be percieved as nit-picking: Bischoff mentions Raoul and Christine went out on a little day trip and saw the Effiel Tower. This is very interesting as this version of PotO took place in 1881 and contruction on the Effiel Tower did not begin until the twenty-third of January, 1887.

I just had to write a review on this...

Okay, I just had to write a review about this because it did not explain how much this book was truly a disgrace.
The author seemed to not even research or know anything about the story or the characters. He didn't even know when the construction of the Eiffel Tower began! The author seemed in such a hurry that he forgot certain and very important things in the original story that made people really love it. But he forgot all the great themes and everything. The Phantom of the Opera, originally, is a very dramatic, sensual, heartbreaking, and unbelievingly beautiful story. Not evil. David Bischoff made his version and Erik seem evil, which it orginally is not. And I know for a fact that it is not. David Bischoff made Erik seem so monstrous and rude to Christine. Christine had just barely met Erik when he demanded that he marry her. The author made Erik sound so barbaric and not at all like the gentlemen in the original novel. He changed Raoul and actually made him nice. He made Christine a little brat, which I hate to say because she is an awesome character and so is Erik. Christine was rather rude to Erik in this one. The authore also made it so that Erik rather lusted after Christine than loved her. I could not see Erik saying things like "My soul is on fire for you" and "I long for your touch" to Christine. The author also changes it so Raoul and Christine's bond was much stronger than Erik and Christine's. Phantom novels like these really p!$$ me off. Take my advice and only buy the book if you really need to have every single phantom novel that ever existed. I only bought it because I was curious to why everyone hated it so much. I almost set it on fire after I was done reading it.

Building an RC model sailing ship

This book is invaluable for those who have done what I have done. In my Building a 1:24 scale model of a three masted Frigate from an SC&H kit I found the detail drawings and sail patterns absolutely necessary.

This book would help in modeling other kinds of ships as well, especially details for such things as pumps, rigging, carronades, cannon, deck fittings, and a host of other details.

Great source for the model-maker and time-sink for the reader

Any committed reader of sea novels set in the Napoleonic wars knows that command of a frigate was the dreamed-of assignment of every young and ambitious captain. Large enough to hold its own in one-on-one combat, small and agile enough to be sent on independent cruises instead of remaining locked into a battle line under the admiral's eye, a frigate was where adventure and fortunes were to be had, given personal abilities and luck. The DIANA was one of the few frigates for which nearly all records and drawings have survived, from its launching in 1794 to its decommissioning and sale to the Dutch in 1815. This volume is pure eye-candy for the buff, including close photographic studies of the several models that have survived, plus several score reconstructed detailed architectural drawings of her hull, deck plans, sail plan, stowage, armament, and outfitting. This is a treasure trove for the model-maker but also a great time-sink for the reader of O'Brian and Forester.

Great book!

I bought this for my 15 year old step daughter who loves to read. She couldn't put the book down and really liked it. I had read the series when I was a girl and remembered it was good. I would recommend the series for teen readers. Since to of the books are combined in this one publication, it is large and a bit heavy. If you're travelling, you may want to purchase individual books if weight and size are a problem (I wouldn't want to carry this around in my purse... too big and heavy).

So far a real good book....

I saw the movie flowers in the attic when I was a kid.... and let me tell you I am in my thirties and I still remember it. So like 20 years has gone by since i have seen the movie and I am in Half Price Books and I see this girl rummaging through V.C Andrews novels. I asked her what does V.C Andrews write and are her books any good? She tells me about the Flowers in the attic book and how there is like a whole series of them. And I freaked out. I told her how i had loved the movie as a kid. Well I bought the book and have been hooked every since. Now i haven't finished the whole book but when i put it down to deal with my every day life ( kids, laundry, cooking) the book is in the back of my mind. The two book comb Flowers in the attic and Petals in the Wind seem to flow there has been no gaps between the two stories that leave me wondering. So i would suggest if you plan on reading both books.... by this book combo. I think it was like $6.00 at half price books:) And dont be intimidated by the size it is a real easy read.

Good books, in a twisted way

I remember being very intrigued with the Flowers in the Attic movie that came out in the late 80s, and wanted to read the book someday. Well, someday came and I did. Then I found out there was a series! I bought the entire series and read it over the course of a year. Books 3 and 4 were a snooze-fest, but overall, it's an ok fiction read (with some questionable adult themes).

I was very happy with the condition of the textbook that I purchased. It was about $10 less than my college book store, I didn't have to wait in the super long line at the book store, I didn't have to pay for gas, and as an added bonus: I didn't have to pay for shipping! Yay! Thanks amazon!

Love this I have an 90's version of this

Love this I have an 90's version of this. I absolutely love these mathematician's they are very good at explaining math (Algebra, Trigonometry, and Precalcus concepts). I wish they would do a complete Geometry textbook and a complete Calculus textbook. I even wrote to Cengage and put in a request for the future about these mathematician's. (Hirsch and Goodman).

Excellent preparation

This is the new official Siddur of Reform Judaism. The book is extremely well laid-out and user friendly. As an over-55 user I find the font size a bit small but still readable. There is a large-print edition also.

The leaders of the Reform Movement have made a collective decision that the original leaders went WAY too liberal in their reforms and largely "threw the baby out with the bathwater". Over the past few years there has been an on-going concerted effort to bring the entire Movement to a much more conservative position, both theologically and ritually, including reintroduction of substantial use of Hebrew in Reform services. The new Siddur is written from this perspective.

Large parts of the book follow one of two patterns. Each two-page set deals with a "matter/subject" and there is a light blue page border. If the border is a box with rounded edges the two pages are considered one "item", e.g., the words of L'cha Dodi take up two pages. On the other hand, if there are straight blue lines at the top and bottom of the page the two pages contain four "items", from which the leader chooses one. The upper right hand corner will contain fully-punctuated Hebrew text on the right and a transliteration on the left (deliberately laid out that way so no one can tell whether you are reading the Hebrew or the transliteration). Below that is a good English fairly literal translation. On the left facing page there are two somewhat freer interpretations.

I don't know why Amazon shows it as "out of print", since it is used in Reform temples throughout the U.S. It should be available directly from the publisher.

New Reform Prayer Book

This is a satisfying and enjoyable Reform prayer book because there are many choices of readings, gender neutral language, and close translations of the Hebrew prayers. For those who don't know Hebrew, the transliterations are parallel to the Hebrew text, so it is easy to follow and participate in the service.

About the Author
Donald Goldsmith was the science editor and co-writer of the PBS television series The Astronomers and the co-writer of NOVA's Is Anybody Out There? with Lily Tomlin. He has written and edited 15 books on astronomy, including The Runaway Universe, Worlds Unnumbered, Supernova!, and The Hunt for Life on Mars. Donald Goldsmith received his Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley, and has taught astronomy courses there and at other institutions, including Stanford University, Cornell University, and the University of California at Santa Cruz. He has received the lifetime achievement award in popularizing astronomy from the American Astronomical Society, the science writing award from the American Institute of Physics, and the Dorothea Klumpke-Roberts award for increasing public awareness of astronomy from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Tobias Owen ranks among the world's leading experts on the solar system. He was awarded the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement for his work on the Martian atmosphere with the Viking Landers in 1976 and led the group of Voyager scientists who discovered the rings of Jupiter in 1979. He is currently a member of scientific teams on the Galileo, Nozomi, CONTOUR, DS-1 and Cassini-Huygens missions. With David Morrison, he co-authored a college text, The Planetary System, and has written over 250 scientific and popular articles. He is professor of astronomy at the University of Hawaii where he studies planets, satellites, and comets with the giant telescopes on Mauna Kea.

This book is used as a text by the University of North Dakota Space Studies program where I was exposed to its content. It is an excellent book filled with the recent nuggets of information about the search for life in the universe. It is an excellent guide to understanding the cosmos in galatic and down-to-Earth terms. This book can be read for pure pleasure as well as for general knowledge of astrobilogy and astronomy.

Excellent Overview

The new edition of this book still is by far the most comprehensive introduction to Bioastronomy, touching almost every branch of science along the exciting path it follows. Remaining firmly grounded in science it shows that reality is so fantastic that it is in no way necessary to fantasize up facts and fictions. Science still is one of the greatest adventures of mankind, and the search for life in space is one of its most stimulating branches. It also is a good motivation for young college students from other subjects to further their knowledge in science - which is necessary because we live in a science dominated world.

The book deals with everything from the formation of stars and planets, to how life formed, to even the best ways to search for life and the odds of life being on other planets. It goes step by step, is easy to understand and even has review questions at the end of each chapter (along with a summary). Lots of photos, some in color, along with figures and tables to help explain and give more details. Great for people who want to understand the reasons people are searching for life on other planets, but also great for just understand the science of life on our planet too. All that and humor too.

A Ripping Good Yarn!

Being a friend to the authors and having read quite a few of their letter/email stories, it was with great anticipation that I began Bodice Rippers. And I wasn't disappointed!

The story seems disjointed and yet falls together in a most charming and funny way. Between the two leading protagonists, some hot guys, several accents of questionable nature and a lot of misadventure, I would have to admit this story had me literally 'lol'ing'. Seriously. Even now, almost 2 days later, I still chuckle over the line about teh security guard's mother and satan.

This story is a must for anyone with a sense of the ridiculous and a great sense of humour. The authors have both of these things in abundance and it's a great thing they are now sharing with others. Five stars ladies, five stars!
