Our Furry Friends: The Science of Pets, by Scientific American Editors

In the U.S., more than half of households have a pet – usually more than one. They’re usually considered members of the family, and some of us even call them our “furry children.” The strength of the human-pet bond tells us as much or more about ourselves as it does about our pets, and in this eBook, Our Furry Friends: The Science of Pets, we look at why dogs and cats behave the way they do and what makes our bond with them so strong. In her opening article, “Pets: Why Do We Have Them?” Daisy Yuhas discusses the variety of reasons for pet ownership, including our emotional need to nurture other living things. This emotional bond brings its own benefits such as social support and reduced stress, making us happier and healthier. How and why pets came to adopt humans is another question entirely, and two articles, “From Wolf to Dog” and “The Taming of the Cat,” look at the evolution of the human relationship with dogs and cats, respectively. Pets’ behavior is examined further in several articles, including “The World According to Dogs,” in which Julie Hecht deciphers what it means when a dog won’t play and whether that “guilty look” really indicates a feeling of responsibility. Meanwhile, in “The Inner Life of Cats,” Kate Wong investigates feline quirks such as why cats purr or bring their kills to their humans. Finally, all pet owners know that animals feel things, and science is starting to agree. As we learn in “Do Animals Feel Empathy?” and “When Animals Mourn,” many species grieve over the loss of relatives or close companions, indicating that empathy and grief could have neural and evolutionary roots.

Exploring the love of pets
By Angie Boyter
More than half of American households have pets, and the pet/human bond is a source of joy for both parties. This book explores the science of cats and dogs, why we love them, and what their own emotional lives are like. It has separate sections on cats and dogs, emphasizing their role as pets but also covering other topics like therapy animals, what we are learning about human cancer from dogs, and whether there really is a strong link between cats and human cases of toxoplasmosis.
Although my impression is that the articles in this book were commissioned specially for this publication, they are similar to what you might read in Scientific American magazine. This means good writing; they explain the science clearly and interestingly to a general reader and are full of fascinating things to share with your family (Did you know, for example, that dogs and humans are the only two species that naturally develop lethal prostate cancers or that dogs are unique in their ablity to understand human communicative gestures or that cat genetics prevent them from tasting sweets?). The down side is that the articles are relatively short and tended to end just after they had whetted my appetite for more on many of the subjects, but a number of the authors have written books to satisfy that appetite.
You don’t have to be an anthrozoologist (a scientist who studies human-animal relationships, which I learned from this book) to know that our pets bring smiles to our faces. So does Our Furry Friends!
CAVEAT EMPTOR: This is an e-book edition of a special issue of Scientific American entitled The Science of Dogs and Cats, which is still available from third-party sellers on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/3598163134/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new The articles are the same, but there are additional pictures in the hard-copy edition that may make it the better choice for many readers.

Animal science lite?
By Darby
As an interested and self-educated science lover and a natural animal lover, this was interesting and entertaining. But it wasn't enlightening. A bit light on the science and a bit heavy on the pop psyche. Still better than the usual dross.

Just what I needed - a how-to book that can stay in the shop next to my lathe. The cover is rubberized and should be easy to keep smudge-free. The writing style is typical pre-war American - every reader must be a young man starting his apprenticeship in the machine-shop trade, and therefore will benefit from helpful guidance in the areas of workplace neatness, respect for authority, comportment, and hygiene. All that aside, it provides an easy to comprehend picture of what a lathe is all about and how to bring out its capabilities. I'm an old man just starting out my golden years with a 1966 Mori Seiki engine lathe, and with no prior machine shop knowledge I should be able to do well with this book showing the way.

Great, reasonably priced reprint of a classic!
By Rick Rose
With an inexpensive reprint like this available, I see no reason to read the darned thing as a .pdf on my computer. Much more enjoyable this way, and it is also easier to carry out to the lathe when I feel like it. I only wish someone offered a similar-quality, similarly-priced reprint of the Atlas Manual of Lathe Operations. Kudos to Martino Publishing.

Good reference book on operation of a manual lathe
By CraigB
This is an excellent book that contains basic information on the operation of a manual lathe. With all the emphasis on CNC lathes today, it is through resources like this book that you can learn to use a manual lathe.

This is a great book for the general public and practitioner alike
By Bruce Pendleberry
This is a great book for the general public and practitioner alike. The author has made available the tools for the average person to help determine their constitutional type so they can apply the dietary information from Korean 4 Constitutional Medicine.
The first chapter talks about the theory of the four body types, and how we are all born with inherent weaknesses and strengths that stay with us throughout our lives. There are four sub body types: Greater Yin, Greater Yang, Lesser Yin and Lesser Yang. Each sub body type has an overactive and underactive aspect to it.
Our overall body type is a combination of these four sub body types: Greater Yin + Lesser Yang, Lesser yang + Greater Yang, Lesser Yin + Greater Yang and Lesser Yin + Greater Yin combinations.

The second chapter talks about allergies and food intolerances, and then the actual foods, both good and bad, for each sub body type. He also talks about why we can eat a food that is bad for our constitution and not even know it. As well as how to find these hidden food sensitivities, and then eliminate or greatly reduce them. There is a section at the end of chapter two on detoxification and weight control that can be easily followed by most people.
Some people may be able to determine their body type just by looking at the food lists for each sub type.
This is done by combining the most tolerant food sub types or eliminating the most aggravating food sub types. There should be two that come out ahead (most tolerant foods) or behind (most aggravating foods) depending on how you do it. Combine the two most tolerant sub types and this may be your body type and or find the most intolerant sub types and by exclusion you may have found your most tolerant sub types.
Just a reminder on combining sub types as stated by the author, “you cannot combine the two greater sub types (greater yin & greater Yang) or the two lesser sub types (lesser yang & lesser yin) because they are opposites of each other and cannot co-exist”.

The third chapter is all about determining your constitutional body type through a questioner. Some of the questions will be hard to answer with certainty. However, after the questioner, he talks about the questions in detail, and this should make it easier to determine the correct answer.

The last section is about psychological types, and how eastern and western thought are very similar in this respect.
There is another questioner for each constitutional body type, which may clarify any uncertainty you had with the first questioner in Chapter 3. Ideally, they should agree, and in the end you will know much more about yourself, how to promote a relative balance within you constitutional imbalance, and ultimately take control of your health and well-being, which is the author’s whole point of this book.

The key to "Tetrasoma, Diet for Four Body Types" is to determine your body type, which can be difficult.
The author has given us three ways to determine this. Seeing which food lists we feel were are compatible with and/or incompatible with, the general questionnaire in Chapter 2, and the psychological based questionnaire in Chapter 3.

As a fellow Acupuncturist, I find this to be a very useful book and highly recommended for my fellow practitioners, Eastern or Western Medicine, and anyone wanting to become healthier and understand an important part of Eastern Medicine that can be accessible to all.

Finally a book that makes sense!!
By David Lama
Finally a book that makes sense, understanding one's body type is key to choosing the right foods for your for your overall good health and well being. Very concise easy to read. There are so many ads and commercials trying to hook people on the latest health approach. But not one addresses the person and their body type. This book is a must read and will be recommending it to my friends and family.

Surprisingly interesting to read and easy to understand
By Jodie
Surprisingly interesting to read and easy to understand, with many ideas and options for no fuss compliancy. I have several health problems including chronic sinus infections, chronic migraines, severe allergies, arthritis, Lymphedema, depression, fatigue, colitis,...you get the picture, and have seen David Lee in the past when visiting in California. Having started following the guidelines for my body type, I have already started seeing dramatic results after a short time. I know I it sounds like an infomercial rant, but I can hardly believe how well I can now think, breathe, and feel! Finally, I'm getting some great results by adhering to Dr. Lee's Tetrasoma Diet and that is amazing for someone that pretty much gave up hope after decades of the trying the best Doctors available. I'm very grateful and highly recommend this book.

Architecture and Power in Africa:, by Nnamdi Elleh

Two of the most ambitious religious edifices of the 20th century are the Our Lady of Peace Basilica in the West African country of the Ivory Coast and the Hassan II Mosque in Morocco. Nnamdi Elleh not only provides a substantial architectural and pictorial analysis of the buildings themselves. Using these two buildings as case studies, he also investigates questions of national memory, urban form, architectural styles, concepts of democracy, social hierarchies as well as the elites who make the decisions to build Africa's post-independence monuments and capital cities. His book is an exciting synthesis of theoretical and empirical analysis that is bound to stimulate debate about the form and content of post-colonial identities in Africa.

He is not responding to the canon, he is writing it."-International Journal of African Historical Studies

Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain, by Maryanne Wolf

"Human beings were never born to read," writes Tufts University cognitive neuroscientist and child development expert Maryanne Wolf. Reading is a human invention that reflects how the brain rearranges itself to learn something new. In this ambitious, provocative book, Wolf chronicles the remarkable journey of the reading brain not only over the past five thousand years, since writing began, but also over the course of a single child's life, showing in the process why children with dyslexia have reading difficulties and singular gifts.

Lively, erudite, and rich with examples, Proust and the Squid asserts that the brain that examined the tiny clay tablets of the Sumerians was a very different brain from the one that is immersed in today's technology-driven literacy. The potential transformations in this changed reading brain, Wolf argues, have profound implications for every child and for the intellectual development of our species.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Wolf, a professor of child development at Tufts University, integrates psychology and archaeology, linguistics and education, history and neuroscience in a truly path-breaking look at the development of the reading brain-a complicated phenomenon that Wolf seeks to chronicle from both the early history of humanity and the early stages of an individual's development ("unlike its component parts such as vision and speech... reading has no direct genetic program passing it on to future generations"). Along the way, Wolf introduces concepts like "word poverty," the situation in which children, by age five, have heard 32 million less words than their counterparts (with chilling long-term effects), and makes time for amusing and affecting anecdotes, like the only child she knew to fake a reading disorder (attempting to get back into his beloved literacy training program). Though it could probably command a book of its own, the sizable third section of the book covers the complex topic of dyslexia, explaining clearly and expertly "what happens when the brain can't learn to read." One of those rare books that synthesizes cutting edge, interdisciplinary research with the inviting tone of a curious, erudite friend (think Malcolm Gladwell), Wolf's first book for a general audience is an eye-opening winner, and deserves a wide readership.

Cracking a Uniquely Important Puzzle
By Dr. Richard G. Petty
What is it about humans that makes them so different from the other inhabitants of this planet?

It is not our big brains: many species do just fine with a much simpler model.

It is not our instincts and intuitions: many species have us beaten there as well.

And it is certainly not our empathy or compassion: we can see that those are highly developed in dozens of other species.

The real difference seems to be the way in which we can communicate information that endures. Communications that survive us and can be passed to people that we have never met.

Complex languages that were able to meld the experiences of many senses were the first step. We can tell stories that contain much more than information: they contain and evoke emotions, memories and even tastes and smells.

The second step is far more recent, and it the strange alchemy that in the last few thousand years enabled our ancestors to record, interpret and teach the significance of squiggles and scratchings.

This engaging book focuses on a question that many of us have asked at some time or other. How did we come upon the unlikely skill call reading? How did our brains achieve this extraordinary feat, working only with neurological systems that had never tried to make sense of systematized rule-based visually presented material?
And what happens in our brain when our eyes scan a line of type? Why do some of us, or some of our children, find it difficult to process the visual information locked in words?

Maryanne Wolf is a professor at Tufts University, where she directs the Center for Reading and Language Research and in this book she offers explanations for these and many other questions. The main thrust of her research is cognitive and biological so the book focuses on writing and the evolution of the brain. However, she does not ignore the cultural and historical contexts in which writing developed.

She focuses on three fundamental principles that operate throughout the human brain:
1. The capacity to make new connections among older structures
2. The capacity to form or appropriate regions of the brain that are specialized for recognizing and extracting patterns in a mass of information
3. The ability to learn to recruit and connect information from these regions of the brain
As a rider to the last point, the recruiting and connecting of different areas of the brain occurs automatically. If you think about someone you will usually be able to associate a visual image of him or her with a sound, smell and emotion. This associative process usually happens without conscious effort.

Maryanne's work indicates that these three principles of design provide the neural machinery essential to reading, and she spends some time explaining the evolution of what she calls the "reading brain." This is not a dry academic exercise: understanding the evolution of reading promises to help us make sense of problems like dyslexia, and it is her insights into that common problem that occupy the second half of the book.

She reveals that that one of her sons suffers from this disability, and discusses something not widely known. There are a number of subtypes of dyslexia, and, as is common with neurological deficits, the brain often compensates. Giving people special talent in fields that emphasize pattern recognition and spatial creativity. I knew someone with disabling dyslexia who set about building a house. Without any kind of diagrams or written plan he was able to calculate the precise amount, shape and size of the timber that would be needed. When he finished the job several months later he was left with only one two foot plank. The remainder of his calculations were spot on. And it does seem that it is the brain that bestows this kind of gift, rather than the person over-compensating for a disability.

Maryanne speaks approvingly of the extraordinary insights of one of my mentors, the late Norman Geschwind. He and a colleague did some fascinating work on a region of the brain called the planum temporale, sadly misspelled in the index. So it surprised me that she did not mention any of the work on disturbances of language with relative preservation of reading in schizophrenia, It would have been interesting to have her take on that.

So why "Proust and the Squid?" Maryanne uses the French novelist Marcel Proust as a metaphor. He believed that reading gives us access to countless different realities that would otherwise be sealed from us. The squid is to pay tribute to the creature who has given so much to neurological research.

I found the book an easy read, but I am a neuroscientist with a particular interest in thought and language, and I always try to imagine what a book might hold for a non-specialist. In places it may be a little difficult for the general reader. Before submitting this review I asked some friends to look over a few sections, and some left them slightly baffled.

I think that scientists have a responsibility to explain their work to the public that pays most of the bills. But I know from personal experience that popularization does not always come easily to people trained to write and communicate in a cautious, unemotional and reserved tone. It is different in the classroom, where the good teacher is expected to lighten up a bit, and pepper his or her teaching with humor and anecdotes. But once we start typing, our old habits return!

I mention this because Maryanne shares the concern of many, that the advent of the computer culture may lead to the atrophy of the "reading brain," which could become no more than an occasionally used device for communicating factual data stripped of all emotion. We already know that many young people fail to comprehend that the abbreviations of the text message cannot be used in school reports. "Texting" is easier and does not required sustained attention. Since humans were never genetically designed to read, such simple solutions may wreck the "reading brain." If young children are not read to, they nearly always fail to learn to read well themselves. Is it already too late for the youngest generation?

This is a fine book by a world expert. It does require a little effort, but it is well worthwhile. I particular recommend it to people who have children with dyslexia. I would also recommend it to people who have dyslexia themselves, but I do not think that an audio version is available yet.

Literary, Historical, Biological, Cognitive, and Futurist Insights into Reading, Creativity, and Brain Development
By Donald Mitchell
I was attracted to this book by the title: What could Proust and a Squid have in common? As it turned out, squids make only two cameo appearances in the book on pages 5-6 and 226 (probably to justify the title in references to the early use of squids in neuroscience studies and for conjecture about passing along genetic traits that make survival more difficult), but Proust in pretty mainstream throughout the book as a resource and reference for describing the richness that reading can bring to individual experience.

Professor Wolf has written a multidisciplinary book that is mind-boggling in its breadth. You'll learn everything from how writing and alphabets developed to why Socrates disfavored reading to how mental processes vary among dyslexics who are reading different languages to the best ways for diagnosing and overcoming reading difficulties.

Yet unlike most multidisciplinary books, this one is very brief and compact. But that compactness is misleading; Proust and the Squid is a challenging book to read and contemplate. Only good readers with a lot of background in literature and neuroscience can probably grasp this book. What's more, there are vast numbers of references that you can pursue if you want to know more.

The writing style makes the book denser than it needed to be. Professor Wolf makes matters worse for lay readers by insisting on the correct scientific names throughout, when the ordinary names would have made the material easier to grasp. As a result, at times you'll feel like you are taking a course in disciplinary vocabulary. At other times, Professor Wolf engages in a penchant for long, abstract sentences: "What is historically humbling about Sumerian writing and pedagogy is not their understanding of morphological principles, but their realization that the teaching of reading must begin with explicit attention to the principles characteristics of oral language." This sentence could be rewritten as "Most impressively, Sumerians developed a written language that made reading easier to learn by visually reproducing what was spoken." Obviously, her rendition is more creative . . . but I like mine better.

Here is what was new to me: Reading involves complex mental processes that are not natural to the brain's earliest functions. As a result, new neural connections need to be developed in the right order if someone is to be a good reader. Various brain scan tests have illuminated this finding and those neural pathways are well illustrated and described in this book. But there are different ways that those neural connections can be made, some of which will make reading difficult.

The book's strength is in providing you with a sense of how humans learned how to develop written language and read it rapidly . . . and gain greatly from reading. The book also is good in the area of making the case for those who can't read aren't deficient, rather than are different in ways that offer other potential advantages such as creativity. If someone in your family doesn't read well, you'll love that part of the message.

Where I thought the book was weakest was in worrying about the implications of highly condensed (and possibly inaccurate) online information substituting for traditional reading of books and articles. To me, it seemed like much ado about nothing. Human curiosity will always drive forward learning, something that Professor Wolf doesn't address. Provide that curiosity with more tools and resources, and more learning will take place. Here's an example. Today I was finishing my proofreading of my latest book. In the past, I had researchers diligently check each quotation for accuracy and source. Inevitably, there would be mistakes that weren't caught and made it into my books. By using the internet to crosscheck the sources this time, I was able to do the task much better and in less time . . . correcting many mistakes in the reference sources in my library. Having had this experience, I'll probably do more seeking of quotations directly from the internet in the future . . . and that will probably improve the quality of my quotations.

Bravo, Professor Wolf!

Difficult to Read
By Ohioan
I think the information in this book is very important, especially the author's main point, that reading changes the brain. However, even though I'm an avid reader of all kinds of books, from graphic novels to scientific nonfiction, from picture books to adult novels, I found this book in particular difficult to read. The sentences are long and convoluted, filled with scientific terms that aren't really explained to a lay reader. From the way it has been advertised and reviewed, this book APPEARS to be aimed at the lay reader: somebody who is interested in reading and reading comprehension. However, the way the book is written, it seems addressed only to academics and perhaps people in law -- those who spend their days reading long, complex sentences that vary little in style or tone.

I liked the content of this book so much that I'd really like to give the book four stars, but I just can't, because, ironically, this book on reading and reading comprehension does not seem to take into consideration what makes a reading experience pleasurable. I maintain that even factual information can be presented in an accurate and well-written way that makes reading it a pleasure. Plus, there is no humor at all in this book. Very dry.

Great reference, terrible as class text book
By David Jimenez
When I was an undergrad, this was the book that my Analysis I teacher decided to use. I can tell you several things about the book, some good, some bad.

* The first good deed: It is very well organized. The topics have a very very natural and didactic order.
* Second: It has A LOT of results you may not find in one single Analysis book other than this. It is very exhaustive.
* Third, it is fairly easy to search, meaning, you will spend less time searching for the result you are looking for.

Now, the bad bad thing about it: If you are interested on proofs and techniques (as you normally are when you are taking a class in the topic), this is probably one of the worse books to study from. A typical proof in this book has two or three lines, with statements like "Apply theorem 2.3.9 and 2.5.23 to (4.8), and then, to that expression, apply corollary 3.8.11 and Lemma 4.3.10, obtaining the desired result". If you are really interested on the inner workings of the result you are proving, you have to go to each of those results, and try to figure out how they apply to your current situation. And of course, to understand the previous theorems, you will have to go and check their individual proofs, getting into a vicious cycle. Thus, as the chapter number increases, expect the number of results to check to increase at least quadratically proportional!

a great and unique book, deep and very rigorous for 1st yr grads
By mathwonk
This book is simply outstanding. It contains more topics of interest in analysis that are hard to find than any other comparable introductory book I know. It is hard to read, but it is worth it. That is not a legitimate criticism of the book. If you cannot benefit from this book, then you were not ready for it. This is a book from the honors classes of the 1960's, when the high quality of the mathematics in a book or course were more important than how easy the author had made the discussion for "dummies". I have treasured this book for over 48 years, and actually own 2 or 3 copies, so I will have one at home, one at work, and one in my locker, as in "Stand and deliver". There is no other substitute for this book. E.g. try and find another beginning complex analysis discussion that includes a proof of the jordan curve theorem (not just for polygonal curves as in Hille). It does have limitations that one can differ with and criticize, such as the complete absence of diagrams, but these are choices by the author, who thinks it benefits the reader to do without them, (perhaps to create ones own). Just the exercises contain more useful material than many texts. This is a superb book, unlike any other I know of. (I am reviewing the hardback Academic Press edition. I bought my first copy in 1963.)

Abstraction to its last consequences.
By Bernardo Vargas
I should be surprised to be the first reviewer of this book, but thinking it again I see the point. Dieudonn's books are just being displaced by more accesible and focused texts, instead of these authoritative Bourbaki-style treatises which are often too abstract to be useful. Bourbaki mathematics accomplished the mission of unifying and standarizing (more or less) the whole of mathematics, but once that was done, their work now turns out to be useless. The point is that when we tackle a problem, be it in pure or applied mathematics, we seldom need the high level of abstraction used by Bourbaki authors. Moreover, what we need are specific results to handle the details of our solututions, and Dieudonn pays almost no attention to them; he prefers to stay at the most general possible setting, making his treatment perspectiveless because he misses completely the goal of abstraction: To use its power when dealing with particular situations. That's why no one has reviewed Dieudonn before me: His books are read no more.
Nevertheless, undergraduate and graduate students may find it useful as a reference, but not as a course text because it presents no motivation to the topics treated and includes only a very short bibliography.
Its contents are: Set theory, real numbers, metric spaces, normed spaces, Hilbert spaces, spaces of continuous functions, differential calculus, analytic functions, existence theorems (for ODE's), and elementary spectral theory.
"Treatise on Analysis" consisted originally on this sole book. Later it was expanded to four and later on to nine.
