After working years in secret, Edmond creates Hart, an artificial intelligence so perfect that she is indistinguishable from humans. Hart learns, interacts with people, shows emotions, and even bleeds; however, when Hart is given free will, things change. Will the artificial intelligent be the exploited or will the humans? On the one hand, the reader can predict what will happen, but on the other, the story is fast paced and well written. Edmond is a believable character. The reader does not have to be as brilliant as Edmond to understand the technology and robotic science that goes into creating Hart it is well within the reader s reach. There are enough unresolved issues and possibilities for different twists that readers will look forward to the next book in what is advertised as a six-book series. Love the story about robots; hate the publisher's money-grubbing publishing style

This is the first part of a six-book series that should have been published as one book. The publisher, Epic Press, is an imprint of educational publisher Abdo Press. Epic Press has stretched book 1, Emergent Behavior, out to 200 pages by using very large type (bigger than type for elderly people's books), wide spacing between lines, and the addition of fluff words. They've also put a library binding on it, so it costs three times what it would have if published as a paperback. To add insult to injury, the author's name is in tiny black type at the bottom of a dark grey cover (not blue as the picture shows). I couldn't find it at first. Finally, the book seems to be aimed at a teen market, but the protagonist, Edmond, is an adult through most of book 1 and I assume for the remaining books as well.

I took off a star for these shenanigans. Perhaps I should have taken off two—but none of these problems were the author's fault.

The story itself is compelling. I quickly came to love Edmond even as I saw his na�vit� and his belief that other people are as well-intentioned as he is would get him into trouble.

Edmond hates the idea of slavery. He hates people being violent toward each other or going to war and dying. An electronics genius, he has an inspiration he thinks is the solution to making the world peaceful and free: robots that look identical to real humans and who can be abused instead of people. He spends book 1 creating iteration after iteration of his idea, each robot closer to human than the one before. Then he finally wakes up to what manufacturers and the military intend to do with such robots.

Unlike some series, book 1 ends with a satisfying conclusion, not just an arbitrary break. However, the story is exciting enough that I want to read book 2 and find out what happens next.

Great book. Good start to a series that makes you want to read more. It flows well, reads easy, and it's got likable characters that you know you're going to like even more in the next book! Check it out!

Robotics prodigy Edmond West creates the first Artificial Intelligent being that people can not tell the difference between man and machine. But after hiding her for so long the government finally finds out and wants Edmond to mass produce more like her, however, Edmond knows this will just lead to the AI's enslavery, and that is when the action starts. This I believe might be a book before its time, I am hoping it is not to advanced in the science part (especially for this opening book) for teens, because I think the idea and background for the book is awesome and so much can be done, so I guess we will just have to see where the author goes from here.

Lost in the shuffle

Yesterday, my laundry hamper was full to overflowing demanding attention as I opened this book. I had seen the author on Good Morning America, and this seemed like an interesting story.

As I started to read thoughts of laundry disappeared, as I was riveted by this compelling story, of a little girl who just wanted to be loved by her mother, or a family.

I could not put this book down until I finished.

It was like I was there looking on as she went through these various ordeals/ adventures.

If you are considering adopting or fostering a child, this book is a must. As you read, you will understand what these children have to go through. That understanding brings compassion. You will also understand what would be parents go through because both sides of the story are told effectively.

If you work in childcare services, this ought to be required reading.

If you are like me, this is an inspiring story about surviving and succeeding against the odds. You may notice this story has a mythical quality, reminiscent of other stories like Oliver Twist, a Roald Dahl story, or even Anne of Green Gables or Harry Potter which the author refers to, except this is for real.

It is shocking to me how a system which is designed to protect children, can fail so miserably at times. How is it possible for a home that is only licensed to have two children end up with 10. How come foster children end up living in a trailer? The children do not have a voice that is heard.

I particularly commend Gay Courter her adoptive mother who also persisted against the odds, where some adoptive parents would have given up. She ended up with a remarkable child who has written a remarkable book, who I feel sure will continue to be a voice for foster children, and orphans.

Three little words...with a lot of power behind them

Although I generally like memoirs, too often I get bogged down in boring minutiae of dysfunctional families. This one was different. I was surprised to find I couldn't put it down.

Rhodes-Courter can write. She vividly describes her years in foster care, being totally honest about herself and the families who were paid to care for her. Mercifully, she knows just how far to go before reader fatigue sets in, and she knows exactly where to stop to leave us disturbed but not overwhelmed.

Anyone who read the author's New York Times piece knows the happy ending: Rhodes-Courter was adopted by a loving family that was uniquely qualified to appreciate her gifts and help her grow as a writer and speaker. As a bonus, she gained two older brothers (they look like teddy bear types) and a houseful of cats.

But we're made to realize there was no fairy tale magic. Ashley Rhodes arrived in the Courter family as a scared, suspicious kid. She didn't know how to hug and she was a picky eater who would drive most people mad. She tested her family over and over again.

Gradually, she became a real family member. Her new brothers teased her when she avoided helping with the dishes ("Hey, are you a guest?") Her mother went along with the food fuss. Her dad was, well, a dad. And she admits she came to realize just how lucky she was,

In what may be the most powerful part of the book, Rhodes-Courter asks a very good question. Why do states pay a fortune for foster care instead of subsidizing the birth parents? What would have happened if her own mother had been given money and support to keep her own children? And why does the state ignore reports of abuse in a foster home yet whisk children away from their own parents at the slightest hint of a problem?

Just stay away from this book if you're on deadline. It sucks you in.

Heart-rending memoir with happy ending

Ashley Rhodes-Courter's memoir is must reading for anyone who cares about children and their welfare. This brave young woman's account of the long road she traveled after being forcibly removed from her birth mother's care to eventually finding security with a family who nurtures her in ways she never could have imagined is a heartbreaker. While the often terrifying journey ends well for Ashley, we know there are thousands more "lost" children out there who will never be as smart, as determined--or as lucky. Now twenty-two and a successful crusader for those caught in the foster-care system as she was--almost interminably--Ashley Rhodes-Courter stands as witness that there has to be a better way to deal with the children left behind when "the state" decides their parents are unfit. Three Little Words (they are not the ones you think) is an incredibly well-written tale, all the more powerful for the fact that every word is true.

About the Author
Susan Long is Professor of Creative and Sustainable Organizations at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, Australia. She is editor of "Socio-Analysis" and a Board member and past President of the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations.

Susan Long supervises research students and conducts organisational research at a variety of universities including INSEAD in Singapore, MEICAT, University of Melbourne, University of Divinity in Melbourne and Crossfields. As an organisational consultant in private practice she works with organisational change, executive coaching, board development, role analysis, team development and management training. She originally trained as a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist. Her experience of working with people as individuals and in groups and organisations gives her a broad perspective on management practices.Susan's capacity as a teacher and organizational consultant/ researcher has led her to be invited onto the boards of prestigious organizations and elected onto the committees of professional bodies. She is a member of the Board of the Judicial College of Victoria and of Comcare's advisory board for the Center of Excellence for Research into Mental Health at Work. She was the founding President of Group Relations Australia and a past president of the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organisations. Her participative action research has attracted grants through the Australian research Council and industry. She has published six books and many journal articles.

well written introduction to Thermodynamics

This is a very well written book about the basic notions one might have to be introduced to Thermodynamics.It is clear, concise, and does not avoid the subtleties of the subject.By focusing the concept of entropy of a closed system,the author gives a quite good discution over the meaning of the thermodynamic functions, a difficult topic for beginers.The first chapter of the book is also very interesting, for it has an up-to-date introduction to the field of thermometry.This book may be used as a companion to a book like Fermi's classic "Thermodynamics" and gives the reader a sound basis for further studies, using a book like Callen's for instance.

This is the best book on thermodynamics EVER written!

All I have to say is...I came...I read...I understand! By the end of the book I could explain to my classmates how to complete problems, and I could also go up to the board in front of the class and answer problems. I had NO fear of being called on by the professor to answer questions in class. BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!

Mediocre as a 'Physics' book

This book doesn't do it for me. I'm in theoretical physics, so I am kinda biased. I prefer the book by Kittel, it seems more like physics to me. I find this book approaches the subject from chemistry, engineering, and physics perspectives, of course I really only care about the physics point of view. I found it kind of dry, and so I didn't enjoy reading this book.

- The exercises are really good. They come with answers so you can double check.
- Very all-around perspective
- Some historical remarks, interesting history of the subject

CONS
- Not rigorous enough for physics (IMO)
- Not a fan of the authors style, it's neither informal nor formal
- I didn't feel I really understood the subject from this book like I did from Kittel

Power and Its Limits at the Apex of the American Roman Catholic Church, Depicted in a Biography of a Gay, Corrupt Prelate

"Militant and Triumphant: William Henry O`Connell and the Catholic Church in Boston, 1859-1944" (University of Notre-Dame Press, 1992), by James O`Toole (a professor at my undergraduate alma mater, the University of Massachusetts at Boston) is a no-holds-barred biography of this figure. William O`Connell happens to be the prelate loosely depicted in the novel, and in the film based thereon, both titled "The Cardinal", although the novel and the film, unlike O`Toole`s scholarly biograhy, only hint at the depravity that lurked below the surface, away from public view, of Cardinal Abp. William Henry O`Connell`s life. O`Toole`s own book reveals O`Connell`s many faults, but it does not pillory him.

This biography renders a fair account of O`Connell`s life and career and of the religious milieu of O`Connell`s time, when Roman Catholic faith and worship flourished, as yet unsabotaged by the grinding vulgarity, liturgical downgrade, superficiality, the outright unbelief that have set in so widely after 1965, and lastly and perhaps worst of all (reflecting so much of the rest of these problems), the dreadful "Novus Ordo" liturgies which came into use at the dawn of the 1970s, as well as all too much of the other sheer rot and decline that so have come to bedevil and to mar the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council. Let`s face it, regarding O`Connell himself, without O`Toole exaggerating anything, one comes to understand the personal shallowness and failings of this priestly-turned-prelatical careerist and opportunist quite well enough simply by reading what O`Toole reveals about O`Connell, such as concerning:

-- pilfering of church funds,

-- self-indulgence, love of luxury, and frequent absenteeism to travel abroad (the lastmost expensive hobby giving rise to his nickname of "Gangplank Bill!),

-- nepotism,

-- tolerance of secret clergy marriages (including that of his own nephew, Mgr. James O`Connell),

-- arrogance and bombast (which recall, among vintage comix characters of yesteryear, the risible "Major Hoople" a lot more than the likes of the heroically powerful and wealthy yet virtuous "Daddy Warbucks" of "Little Orphen Annie"),

-- secretiveness and hypocrisy; an example of this is O`Connell`s own "closeted" homosexuality (though O`Toole approaches this more gingerly, expressing more reservations about it than have some others, whose accusations point to O`Connell as the source of the systematic practice and clerical tolerance of the beastly pederasty and ephebophilia of the Boston Archdiocese`s priests that have resulted in the outbreak of terrible scandals during the episcopates of his successors over the decades subsequent to O`Connell`s death),

-- selfishness,

-- bullying,

-- real cowardice (despite all of his bluster, posing, and tormenting of the vulnerable), making him likely to back off cravenly from many strong confrontations (despite his public relations image of steadfastness and courage),

-- general worldliness and indifference to spiritual matters such as liturgy, praying the Breviary, and other matters of truly religious importance beyond the Church`s most materialistically and blatantly institutional concerns.

The book is exceedingly well researched, with copious use of primary manuscript sources as well as of all kinds of printed literature in book and serial form, as anyone who follows up the many back-references will discover for himself.

Only a fuller treatment of O`Connell`s worthy efforts at music is lacking, which O`Toole mentions here and there but without covering so well as O`Connell`s musical contribution merits (to account for perhaps with the assistance of an academic or other practising music professional). The man who became Cardinal of Boston, if he had followed another career path, could have become an accomplished professional pianist and composer, perhaps a singer, too. I once had the opportunity, early in my music library career, to catalogue a bit of Cardinal O`Connell`s fine Latin Church music in manuscript (though he is best remembered for his pious and once popular vernacular hymns), which partly is how I became interested in this ecclesiastical figure. Cardinal O`Connell became rather well known for his pre-Vatican II hymns, which were genuinely popular as productions of musical piety for those times.

The book makes for a good read and a first-rate contribution to the study of Roman Catholicism`s history and sociology, not only in the Archdiocese of Boston, but in North America more generally.

History Generates Organisational Problems: O'Connell

Good book, interesting for Catholics to read. O'Connell's naked ambition was apparent to local priests and bishops as he slithered to the top job he sought.
If what this book claims is correct, O'Connell was not fit to be a catholic priest!

I love the tongue in cheek "the closer you get to the centre of the apple, the more likely you are to meet the worm." Worms do well in Church insecurity which has been dragged bleeding into the modern age.

Pius IX excommunicated those left and and centre when he lost the Papal States, a loss which was in fact a liberation for Italy for the Church. (read: Prisoner of the Vatican.

It is in the context of this fear and suspicion that people like O'Connell can wriggle their way to the top. Still to this day, Bishops are appointed by a Rome (rather than by the local church) fearful of modernity, a Roman Bureaucracy which tries to undo Lumen Gentium guidance of Vatican II. It is in the environment of suspicion, where priests must appear to toe the line as O'Connell did, that the pedophiles have masquerading as priests while the decent toiler was sidelined. There is a good book on Cardinal Moran in Sydney. I would love some good heavy historical work to done on Cardinal Spellman!

Some theories propose that human right-handedness evolved in the context of language and speech while others that it was a product of the increasing motor demands associated with feeding or tool-use. In the past 20-25 years, there has been a plethora of research in animals on the topic of whether population-level asymmetries in behavioral processes or neuro-anatomical structures exist in animals, notably primates and people have begun to question the historical assumptions that hemispheric specialization is unique to humans.

This book brings together various summary chapters on the expression of behavioral and neuro-anatomical asymmetries in primates. Several chapters summarize entire families of primates while others focus on genetic and non-genetic models of handedness in humans and how they can be tested in non-human primates. In addition, it makes explicit links between various theoretical models of the development of handedness in humans with the observed patterns of results in non-human primates. A second emphasis is on comparative studies of handedness in primates. There is now enough data in the literature across different species to present an evolutionary tree for the emergence of handedness (and perhaps other aspects of hemispheric specialization, such as neuro-anatomical asymmetries) and its relation to specific morphological and ecological adaptations in various primate species.

Geographic information systems (GIS) have spurred a renewed interest in the influence of geographical space on human behavior and cultural development. This book proposes the development of spatial humanities that promises to revitalize and redefine scholarship by (re)introducing geographic concepts of space to the humanities. Humanists are fully conversant with space as concept or metaphor―gendered space, the body as space, and racialized space, among numerous other rubrics, are common frames of reference and interpretation in many disciplines―but only recently have scholars revived what had been a dormant interest in the influence of physical or geographical space on human behavior and cultural development. This renewal of interest stems in large measure from the ubiquity of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in contemporary society. From online mapping and personal navigation devices to election night maps colored in red and blue, we are more aware than ever of the power of the map to facilitate commerce, enable knowledge discovery, or make geographic information visual and socially relevant.

GIS lies at the heart of this so-called spatial turn. At its core, GIS is powerful software that uses location to integrate and visualize information. Within a GIS, users can discover relationships that make a complex world more immediately understandable by visually detecting spatial patterns that remain hidden in texts and tables. Maps have served this function for a long time: the classic example occurred in the 1850s when an English doctor, John Snow, mapped an outbreak of cholera and saw how cases clustered in a neighborhood with a well that, unknown to residents, was contaminated. Not only does GIS bring impressive computing power to this task, but it is capable of integrating data from different formats by virtue of their shared geography. This ability has attracted considerable interest from historians, archaeologists, linguists, students of material culture, and others who are interested in place, the dense coil of memory, artifact, and experience that exists in a particular space, as well as in the coincidence and movements of people, goods, and ideas that have occurred across time in spaces large and small. Recent years have witnessed the wide application of GIS to historical and cultural questions: Did the Dust Bowl of the 1920s and 1930 result from over-farming the land or was it primarily the consequence of larger term environmental changes? What influence did the rapidly changing cityscape of London have on literature in Elizabethan England? What is the relationship between rulers and territory in the checkered political landscape of state formation in nineteenth-century Germany? How did spatial networks influence the administrative geography of medieval China? Increasingly, scholars are turning to GIS to provide new perspective on these and other topics that previously have been studied outside of an explicitly spatial framework.

Spatial humanities, especially with a humanities-friendly GIS at its center, can be a tool with revolutionary potential for scholarship, but as such, it faces significant obstacles at the outset. The term humanities GIS sounds like an oxymoron both to humanists and to GIS experts. It links two approaches to knowledge that, at first glance, rest on different epistemological footings. Humanities scholars speak often of conceptual and cognitive mapping, but view geographic mapping, the stock in trade of GIS, as an elementary or primitive approach to complexity at best or environmental determinism at worst. Experts in spatial technologies, conversely, have found it difficult to wrestle slippery humanities notions into software that demands precise locations and closed polygons. At times, applying GIS to the humanities appears only to prove C.P. Snow’s now-classic formulation of science and the humanities as two separate worlds.

Taking GIS in new directions

This book proposes the development of a spatial humanities that would revitalize and redefine scholarship by (re)introducing geographic concepts of space to the humanities. The power of GIS for the humanities, the editors propose, lies in its ability to integrate varied kinds of information from a common location, regardless of format, and to visualize the results in combinations of transparent layers on a map of the geography shared by the data. The authors propose taking what GIS offers in the way of tools, while urging new agendas upon GIS that will shape it for richer collaborative engagements with humanities disciplines. For example, the chapter, "The potential of spatial humanities" discusses how one researcher used GIS to rebut the standard Dust Bowl narrative that blamed farmers in Oklahoma and Kansas in the 1920s and 30s for using ruinous, ecologically insensitive agricultural practices, thus turning a pristine prairie into wasteland. It also illustrates how another researcher re-mapped Europe from AD 300 to 900 to show the connection between developments in communication and transportation that scholars previously had studied in isolation. The editors conclude with a discussion of six themes that mark the nascent field of spatial humanities.
