A wonderful companion book to The Secret World of Arietty (the film)

My seven-year-old and I are great fans of Studio Ghibli productions and watched The Secret World of Arietty last weekend. In the tradition of Hayao Miyazaki's animated films, Arietty (screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa, directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi) is full of wonder and vivid, detailed hand-drawn animation.

Inspired by Mary Norton's The Borrowers, The Secret World of Arietty centers on a family of little people called The Borrowers, who live in a quiet old house set amidst nature. The family of little people comprise father Pod, over-anxious mother Homily, and teen daughter Arietty who is a budding explorer and yearns for adventure.

The borrowers' quiet existence is brought to an end with the arrival of twelve-year-old Shawn, a sickly young boy who has been sent by his parents to his aunt's house in the country, while he awaits to undergo an operation. Shawn has heard stories of the little people from his mother, and when he spies Arietty flitting among the flowers one day, it changes the course of both their lives. Can a 'bean' (human being) be friends with a borrower? Or are their worlds incompatible?

This beautifully-illustrated picture book/ graphic novel contains lots of color illustrations as seen in the movie, with text to accompany the illustrations. There is enough text here to convey the essence of the story, and my seven-year-old was completely absorbed in the book, reading independently and delighting in the illustrations. I'd recommend this to fans of the movie, and for anyone who appreciates a well-illustrated story.

My daughter and I both liked it

My 5-year-old daughter and I really enjoyed reading this together. The art is beautiful and we root for the characters. She had previously enjoyed other Studio Ghibli picture books, My Neighbor Totoro Picture Book (The Art of My Neighbor Totoro) and Kiki's Delivery Service Picture Book[ KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE PICTURE BOOK ] by Miyazaki, Hayao (Author) Jun-01-06[ Hardcover ]

The Secret World of Arrietty Picture Book

I watched the movie with my two grandchildren, Nicholas 9 and Victoria 5. This was the first time ever that Victoria sat still and was totally captivated by Arrietty and the story. I bought the book for her for Christmas because she will be delighted to have more of Arrietty. The book is perfectly beautiful and follows the movie exactly. I highly recommend it.

Jim Marrs is best known for Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy (1989), the book that Oliver Stone's film JFK was partially based on. Now Marrs attacks new mysteries and conspiracies in this extensive review of UFO history and government cover-ups. After describing his own UFO sighting near Jackson, Mississippi, in 1952, Marrs recounts his involvement with other UFO cases as a newspaper reporter and his suspicions that the U.S. government knows much more about aliens than it will admit. As his title indicates, the author has concluded that UFOs are piloted by extraterrestrials of various types and with diverse motives. However, rather than taking that conclusion for granted, Marrs guides his readers through 50 years of UFO history that includes some less-traveled byways, off-ramps, and dead ends. He incorporates an ample amount of information from UFO books of the 1960s and 1970s--strange lights on the moon, the ancient-astronaut theories of Erich von Daniken, cattle mutilations, Nazi saucers at the South Pole, the contactees of the 1950s--and updates it credibly with UFO data from the 1980s and 1990s, providing a reasonable survey of abductions, secret underground UFO bases, the MJ-12 group, crop circles, remote viewing, and channeling. How can something as momentous as contact with aliens be kept secret? In an appendix, Marrs refers to the Bilderbergers and the Council on Foreign Relations as examples of how small groups of powerful individuals can withhold information and manipulate world events. Excellent Overview of UFOlogy

Jim Marrs has produced an excellent overview of the UFO literature and history, from its possible origins in folk/fairy tales and biblical passages to its current manifestations in the form of crop circles, animal mutilations, and alien abductions. Even though the author does believe that UFOs are "real," I feel that he is very objective in his writing (which is rare for a journalist such as himself). Although it may not be enough to satisfy the Philip Klasses of the world, he does present some of the evidence and criticisms of debunkers alongside the cases he refers to. Naturally, despite the book's length, I found incidents and theories that I would like to have seen expounded further upon and which I would have included. These are just my own personal feelings, of course, and I fully understand that no author of such an overview could include every thing I would want nor (I am sure) everything that even he wanted to include. Even as someone fairly well-read in ufology, though, I must admit that there were several "new" events and ideas contained in the book that I had not seen nor considered before. Anyone interested in UFOs would profit from this book, even those who still refuse to consider their existence.
The first chapter was particularly interesting to me and, I feel, somewhat brave on the part of the author. Basically, this chapter tosses up the concept of earth's moon being a spaceship. I must say unequivocally that the author does not argue that this is the case, however. While this is an interesting premise and should not be dismissed out of hand, I worry that some doubters out there will simply quit reading when they see such a "preposterous" notion in the very first chapter. I would encourage anyone who does feel the impulse to toss the book aside at the very beginning to keep reading because your beliefs will either be challenged or reinforced by this book.
Finally, the book is very well documented in terms of the sources Jim Marrs consulted. Not only is there a list of notes and references for each chapter, there is a pretty big bibliography at the end. This is very important for works in this field because the author, if he is going to challenge the reader to consider the reality of UFOs, should feel it is his duty and requirement to point the reader to the locations of the facts as he gathered them, so that the reader--if he/she chooses--can consult those same works. Alien Agenda is the type of book that ufologists need to produce because it strengthens the foundation of the entire literature and puts the pressure on debunkers to disprove each incident and idea one by one rather than ridicule and dismiss the entire field as a whole.

One of the Best books I have Ever read!

Wow! Jim Marrs has done his homework and provided a vast amount of information from different perspectives. He discusses the UFO phenomenon throughout history to the present day, including inside info. on possible underground alien communities existing on Earth and Mars.

The book starts off with UFOs and the secret interest of world governments, the development of advanced technologies, and then goes into abductions, animal mutilations, crop circles, remote viewing, and the future of our planet.

I especially learned a lot from the last chapter, which explains the history of the Federal Reserve Bank and certain secret societies of the wealthy, elite few who rule this world through the use of worthless paper money.

You should definitely read this book! I took my time with it and absorbed every word. It was well worth the time. Thank you Jim Marrs!

An intriguing read

What an intriguing read! I did find the title a tad misleading. I thought the book was a theory about what the agenda of the Aliens might be. Instead, I was treated to the agenda of the government in keeping historical and current information about extraterrestrial visitations from us, the people. Information that has not made it into the mainstream mass media is ferretted out in a way that is realistic, documented and makes sense. A final question is asked: if we *do* have visitors who want us to "take them to our leader," just who would that leader be? What does he or she represent? And what are the priorities in representing Earth? The possibilities are intriguing, to say the least, and leave the reader with many questions that remain to be answered with nothing more, and nothing less, than serious contemplation by each and every one of us.

Explains the Course in Miracles

This makes understanding A Course in Miracle much easier. To some it will touch a bit of the Twilight Zone but the knowledge of who Jesus was and the real story comes through. For the first time someone touches on the fact that Jesus had a sense of humor. It is an easy quick read and most of our weekly ACIM have read it .

From where I left off, I remember this being a good expansion of the Course ideas. It just doesn't tell me how to stop hating other people who drive cars & trucks like turds and see them for who they really are. Its just more rehash of the Course which is information but not practical solutions.

having searched for a book on this leader but finding it out of my price range i happened to find a copy for �10 in Turkey of this book. It is a brilliant read. A man forgotten in the west but so properly idolised in turkey. Now I understand what all the fuss is about. This character is no Mussolini, Stalin or other jumped up tin pots but a man of the most amazing integrity and insight. It is amusing the way Lloyd George spend his whole career trying to undermine him but in the end with the defeat of the grekks fell from power due to his integrity. A tear passed my eye reading about the death of this hero and I certainly felt that i understood a bit more the respect and emotions theTurks have towards him.

This is the biography to own if you want to learn about the life and accomplishments of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the modern Turkish republic. Every American especially should read this man's story. It will make you appreciate the real presidential leaders and men of courage that America once birthed. Today's generation of American presidents cannot hold a candle to the virtue and bravery of Mustafa Kemal. And the Turks are keeping his memory alive through their education system and in their strong and enduring family traditions. I bought this book new in paperback at a book seller's outside the Grand Bazaar in Istabul for 50 YTL or about $30 USD. Lord Patrick Balfour Kinross had a grasp of Turkey and its history that make this the biography the one against which all later efforts continue to be measured.
