A good introduction to risk in a supply chain

This is a good introduction to risk analysis in a supply chain. I thought the author spent too much time exploring subjects around the risk analysis,but I see how the topics are linked and it would be hard to give a good definition of risks without exploring mitigation topics as well. This is a good book and well worth the time spent reading it as part of developing your risk analysis.

An Exquisitely Crafted Perspective on the C20th

The scale and scope of what Higgs presents us with in this book is belied by its easy reading.

It reminded me a little of Bill Bryson's 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' in that Higgs's writing manages to combine breadth and depth without being heavy or obtuse. Key to this, is his choice of motif. As well as the recurrent theme of perspectivism (or what readers of Higgs's brilliant KLF book might prefer to call multiple-model agnosticism), the motif of 'the omphalos' acts for the book as it did in the ancient world, as the 'axis mundi' (or, centre of the world). Higgs's history of the C20th revolves around several often interrelated and seemingly solid and concrete ideas; certainties of science, belief, social order, and culture which bedrocked our conception of the world at particular points in the C20th. As the narrative seamlessly morphs from the destruction of one omphalos to the creation of another, the reader perceives a sense of a movement between certainty and uncertainty, order and chaos. That perception of movement acts to challenge the polarizing dynamic of dualism so inherent to our Western thought. This appreciation of the meaning of the movement itself, rather than a blinkered and functional view of where the movement takes us, also serves to help Higgs avoid the awful phrase that I most dread seeing in any historical treatment of the currents of thought, science and culture ; 'We now know'.

That Higgs considers his subjects contextually, with an empathy for the contemporary perspectives - and because of his tacit challenge to dualism - any quibbles one has with him, over the details and points of focus of his historical gaze, tend fizzle out. With such a huge landscape to map out, there are bound to be moments where his perspective will not coincide with your own [for me it was his general treatment of Money and the specific chapter on Sex]. But that your own and Higgs's ideas differ, does not make them incompatible within the larger framework. This isn't to say that anything goes. The reader still gets a sense of who Higgs is, what he believes, and a feeling for his moral compass and his humanity. But rather, it says that our models of the world are always and necessarily limited. Some are better than others, of course. The real danger lies though, in straitjacketing ourselves within one particular set of ideas, rather than in those ideas being right or wrong. Over time, it seems pretty likely that actually they will be regarded as wrong at some point.

Fans of Higgs's KLF book, and those persuaded to the book by Alan Moore's endorsement, might wonder quite how much magical thinking permeates it. The only overt passage that springs to mind is very near the end where Higgs applies a concept from Alchemy to explain some ideas about reductionism and holism, and how it is that the isolating drive to individualism can conclude in its counterpoint - the creation of a network society. I think though, the influences of Chaos Magic and Robert Anton Wilson run throughout the book all the same. By not being laid bare within the body of the text they are perhaps, presented in their best light - that is, hidden in the shadows. I think this is actually helpful for general reader. The exigencies of offering an overt explanation of magical thinking would've created too much dissonance, especially for readers with a bent towards materialism and techno-scientific explanations of reality. And I expect, there will be many such readers. Higgs explanations of relativity, chaos theory and in particular his brilliant metaphor for quantum mechanics (the imagined media reaction to Vladimir Putin punching a kangaroo) will really appeal to this audience. But I also expect those alternative ways of thinking that have influenced Higgs himself, will take seed quietly within the mind of every reader.

In a way, this book is a bit like an Adam Curtis documentary - but whereas Curtis has sounds and pictures to get across more complex ideas than are expressed in his simple narrative, Higgs somehow manages to do that trick with words only and still made it read easy. It's a truly impressive book. And I can't think of anyone I know who wouldn't thoroughly enjoy it.

In Masturbation: The History of a Great Terror (trans. by Kathryn Hoffman), Jean Stengers and the late Anne Van Neck, Belgian scholars, attribute Western society's long-standing antimasturbatory fervor to "certain ideas... launched by several men" not, like many cultural phenomena, to broad social tendencies. The earliest opponent was the anonymous English author of a widely distributed pamphlet; the Swiss Dr. Samuel-August Tissot was the next loud voice. The authors follow a string of successors in this rigorous, well-turned and enlightening study.

Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders was fired for suggesting that schools teach about masturbation. Why? The story goes back to 1700 and a quack's tome titled Onania. The ensuing snowball of medical and social horror about solo sex reached its greatest mass about 1800-80 then slowly began to melt in reaction to medical and sociological evidence. Yet traces of the terror remain. Belgian historians Stengers and Van Neck tell the story with relish and exhaustive references, attempting to make some sense of what may have been a historical fluke. While the history of masturbation has been updated somewhat since the 1984 original publication of this work in French, Stengers and Van Neck's chronicle draws together many sources unavailable in English. It's also a good read. This work belongs in academic and large public libraries, necessarily those with collections in the history of science and medicine. Smaller public libraries and lay readers might consider Edward Rowan's The Joy of Self-Pleasuring (LJ 5/1/00), which covers historical aspects of masturbation in much less detail. In this little treatise on the Geometry of the Triangle are presented some of the more important researches on the subject which have been undertaken during the last thirty years. The author ventures to express not merely his hope, but his confident expectation, that these novel and interesting theorems - some British, but the greater part derived from French and German sources - will widen the outlook of our mathematical instructors and lend new vigour to their teaching.

The book includes some articles contributed by the present writer to the Educational Times Reprint, to whose editor he would offer his sincere thanks for the great encouragement which he has derived from such recognition. A Celebration of Teachers by Poetry's Most Popular Advocate for Teaching

If the title of this book sounds familiar to you, it might be because you have witnessed author Taylor Mali perform the poem of the same title -- a stirring and freshly modern defense of teaching -- at your school or local performance space. Or maybe it was forwarded to you as a text via email, with Taylor Mali's name attached (or not). Or maybe you are one of the people responsible for the SIX MILLION+ hits the poem has received on YouTube (feel free to look it up yourself if you haven't seen it yet). And based on this, and Taylor's decade-plus long career as a touring poet & teaching artist, you might assume that this book is a collection of poetry.

But while "What Teachers Make" (the book!) does contain (some) poetry, it is so much more than that.

In this extraordinarily charming book of essays, Mali shares his thoughtful & smart insights on the ups and downs, challenges and breakthroughs, struggles and triumphs that comes the mantle of teaching. Mali inspires and motivates, and through an extensive collection of poignant & funny anecdotes showcases how teaching is truly a science and an art... and perhaps more than that, it is a calling which should be deeply respected and honored.

I highly recommend this book to any teachers or teachers-to-be. But also, I would recommend it to the parents or skeptical family members of people who are choosing the teaching profession. It makes an incredible & compelling case for teaching, and I wouldn't be surprised if people began gifting "What Teachers Makes" to the disbelieving people in their lives, and simply said, "Read this. It will explain everything."

Straight from the heart. I could feel it

Reading this book I felt I was having a coffee get-together with a great teacher and a wonderful person. The book starts of with the poem that went viral and it's followed by close to thirty small essays where the teacher zips in and out of various topics. We hear a justified outrage towards society for "being judged by the size of our paycheck instead of by the difference we make"; personal anecdotes from the author's teaching experience from different parts of the world; tips, learning experiences and pointers that helps in the "art of explanation"; emotions and tears while making calls to the student's parents; introductions to the author's mentors and more. Towards the end, the teacher also counters the criticism levelled at teachers saying that ineffective teachers shouldn't be seen as representative of teachers everywhere and that the accusations of greed just doesn't hold up if you look at the numbers. The book touches upon some of the educational policy issues but the focus in on the author's personal experience. So it's not a detailed look or analysis of the points one see in the recent discussions regarding education policy: classroom size, publicizing the performance data etc.

Yes, good teachers certainly need to be reminded that "they're dearly loved" and I'm only glad to support Teacher Mali and his 'thousand teacher' cause. Plus one star for reminding me that it's been a while since I paid visit to some of my teachers back from the school days.

Now, a question to me and others:
Teachers make a difference.

I Really Wanted to Like This!

As a high school English teacher, I am always a fan of books that promote teaching and encourage us to take a fresh look at one of the most influential and important positions in America. I was thrilled after glancing at Taylor Mali's book, and while I was excited to read it at the beginning, by the end, I was fairly disappointed.
Mali has a strong introduction, explaining how the poem which shares the same title as the book, came about, and how his career evolved as a result of this poem (he no longer is a classroom teacher, but instead, travels the world teaching poetry to students and teachers alike). Quickly, however, Mali begins focusing on short anecdotes intended to highlight the demands, intrinsic rewards and sheer joy of teaching, as seen through his own experience. I enjoyed this at first, but it soon began to feel very self-promoting and repetitive (Mali includes much of his own poetry and shares stories which are intended to highlight his academic genius).
Mali has great voice, but unfortunately, his time outside of the classroom shows. So much has changed since he was a teacher in the '90s that the book seems out of date and out of touch (Mali devotes a chapter to the genius behind creating a computer-based grade book - something that is fairly standard in most districts across the nation). Furthermore, with shifts toward common core, standardized testing, differentiated instruction, and sound grading practices, Mali's work seems a bit too idealistic to be a truly enjoyable read (for example, Mali goes into great detail about his favorite assignment - having students create a Roman-style shield that was impenetrable against a sword - and freely admits that the grade was based on artistic style and strength and had little to no curricular benefit - something which would not tie in nicely to a curriculum that is intended to blend fun and learning).
While I really wanted to like this book (and was thinking it would be a great gift to give to students who dream of being teachers), this book is out of touch with the reality of teaching today. Mali who hasn't been in a classroom since cell-phones invaded has a few really good suggestions and heartfelt stories, but this is not all that it could have been.
