Caveat Emptor

IA&I is a quintessential reference for anyone interested in trading the markets, newby to professional. My favorite thing about the book is Mr. Gayed's respect for the reader. Regardless of how simple or complex the subject matter at hand, the voice is educational and encouraging. The book starts out very basic, almost a little too basic for sophisticated types, but quickly gets into the meat of what hungry minds crave.

As a professional trader I've read dozens of books on every facet of market intelligence. There's simply no other text that ties together the myriad factors affecting markets in the succinct, systematic approach outlined by Mr. Gayed. This is a "must own" for anyone interested in a true education of how the world's best professional money managers approach the profession and interpret the often conflicting whims of esoteric economic, quantitative, technical, and fundamental data.

You'll never feel dumb when reading this book, except in hindsight. ;)

Summing up the book in one word: Process

“Recognizing that the stock market is a difficult game to play and admitting that investing in securities is an art, we can only preface this book by saying, ‘Good luck.’”

So writes Michael E.S. Gayed in the forward to Intermarket Analysis and Investing, originally published in 1990 and republished in 2013.

Outside of politics, few areas of life are in greater need of fresh thinking than the investment profession. Like students of political ideologies or religious cults, investors often fall into dogmatic camps. There are chartists, who view stock patterns as if they are prophetic views of the future. There are value investors who view the utterances of Warren Buffett and Benjamin graham like divine revelations. There are trend followers…and contrarians who actively bet against the prevailing trend.

There is a dedicated core of followers for virtually any investing style you can imagine (and plenty that you can’t). But the problem with rigid schools of thought is that what works in one market does not necessarily work in another.

This is the basis of Gayed’s book. Rather than lean too heavily on one particular method, with all of its inherent flaws, Gayed attempted to meld the various schools of thought into a unified process. He’s not the first analyst to do so, and he certainly wasn’t the last. But his attempt is one of the most comprehensive I’ve seen, and it was made over 20 years ago.

Investment books tend to have a somewhat finite shelf life. Stories and anecdotes can look somewhat dated with the passing of time. But as with Graham and Dodd’s Security Analysis, first published during the pits of the Great Depression, there is value in studying historical anecdotes and in reading a contemporary account of the times. History tends to get “scrubbed” with the passing of time, which makes learning its lessons more abstract and difficult. Gayed’s book fits a particular time period—the late 1980s and very early 1990s—making it an effective time capsule of the era immediately preceding the Internet Revolution.

One of the aspects I most respect about Gayed’s work is that he is intellectually honest. Investing isn’t easy, and no “how to” book is a guarantee of success. You will make mistakes along the way, but those mistakes make you a better investor if you make analyzing them part of your process.

And this is really the key word: process. All 484 pages of the book can essentially be boiled down to one critical point: you must have a rigorous investment process in place. The process can take different forms, but a regular assessment of the results should be a key part of it. Process brings order from the chaos and prevents your investment decisions from being “a random walk of trial and error.” And if it is failing to deliver results, “perhaps the whole process should be examined to uncover where things went wrong.”

Well said, Mr. Gayed.

Gayed addresses the strengths and weaknesses of each of the major schools of investing thought. For example, of fundamental analysis he writes that it is “more reliable than any other approach…tangible and logical.” But also acknowledging its shortcomings, he notes that “fundamentals tend to lag behind the price action. The discounting mechanism of the market often senses evolving financial problems before the company actually discloses them.”

Similarly, Gayed notes that quantitative market timing approaches are “most helpful in allowing investors to buy or sell a security at the most opportune price.” But they can also let you “get carried away in a frenzy of speculation and overtrading, eventually becoming a gambler.” And remember, Gayed wrote this in the days before discounted internet trading and algorithmic bots!

I liked Gayed’s comments on contrarian investing because I see some of my own psychological shortcomings in his words. While betting against the crowd at key moments can by wildly profitable, “The crowd is not wrong at all market junctures… The only correct application of the contrarian approach occurs when market psychology reaches unanimity in either direction. Beware of being a contrarian all the time, since this attitude violates the well-established norms of trend following.”

Given my experience of working with Harry Dent for the better part of a decade, I found Gayed’s comments on demographics to be particularly interesting. Dent made several bold predictions that proved to be correct and became a very successful New York Times bestselling author in the early 1990s by using demographics as a forecasting tool. I still consider his first bestseller—1993’s The Great Boom Ahead—to be his best.

Dent is widely considered to be the first analyst to effectively use demographics in the investment process. But Gayed appears to have independently reached many of the same conclusions at around the same time:

All industry groups are affected in varying degrees by demographics. Beginning in the 1970s, the economy has felt the impact of the baby boomers—those born between 1945 and 1960… The influence of demographics is likely to continue into the first quarter of the next century as the baby boomers grow older. There might be increased demand for such services as health care, banking, investments, insurance, nursing homes, leisure, travel, etc… Demographics should be factored into the overall investment strategy.

This could have been written today, but Gayed wrote it in 1990. The prescience is impressive.

Gayed saves some of his best insights for last in the section on intermarket relationships. The capital markets are a complex organism. “Market links are interrelated, and they tend to feed on each other… The commodities market, for example, influences the trend of interest rates, which affect the bond market. This, in turn, impacts securities prices.”

In this era of central bank intervention, it’s important to remember not to view each segment of the market in isolation. Intermarket analysis is complicated…and messy…and you won’t always put the pieces together. But it should be part of the thought process that goes into your asset allocation. Gayed notes that an astute investor would have seen that the accelerating inflation of the 1970s would have been great for commodities but terrible for bonds. But when the Fed’s high interest rates in the 1980s halted inflation, the high real interest rates in place set the stage for a long-term bull market in bonds…which in turn led to a long-term bull market in stocks.

I would add that more recently, investors with a deeper understanding of intermarket dynamics would have known that the Fed’s explosive growth in its balance sheet would not be inflationary given the debt deflation going on in the private sector. First order thinking would tell you to expect inflation. Second order thinking would tell you to expect flat or even falling prices.

Oh, and remember “TED spreads”? These are the spreads between Treasury bills and Eurodollar rates that become front-page news during the 2008 meltdown when the capital markets ceased to function. Few people had ever heard of TED spreads prior to 2008. Gayed was writing about them in 1990.

I recommend you pick up a copy of Intermarket Analysis. Gayed’s magnum opus is an exhaustive collection of investment insights that he has done a remarkable job of funneling into a cohesive framework for analysis. The sheer scope of material covered would put most MBA programs to shame.

In this book Michael E.S. Gayed takes readers through how financial markets inter-relate with each other to signal possible trends in prices across different financial markets. The book shows readers the characteristics of cyclical peaks and troughs and attempts to give them the tenets of multidisciplinary analysis to identify them in real time. The author shows through charts how markets are cyclical in nature and tied to the business cycle. Whether an investor is an economist, a fundamentalist, or a market timer, he is betting on the trend. Investors should not try to forecast the trend but follow it as long as it exists and recognize unemotionally when the weight of the evidence points to a change in course. This is a book about the basics of how consumer demand, unemployment, interest rates, and other fundamental factors effect the price action of the stock market. This is a great place to start for readers interested in learning about the macro view when investing or trading.

Just what I wanted

I bought this book to upgrade from Fruit and Berries for the Home Garden and got exactly what I was hoping for. I also have the Vegetable Gardener's Bible and was hoping that this book would be just as great for fruit. The book has a lot of color pictures and detailed information on each type of fruit. It's broken down into 4 sections: Getting Started, Berries, Tree Fruits and Nuts and Growing Healthy Fruit. There are large sections on each fruit that tell about different varieties and where they grow best, how to plant and care for the fruit, dealing with pest and disease and harvesting. The last section also contains abundant information on soil, pruning and dealing with pest and disease. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great source of information on all types of fruits.

California citrus and tropical not included....

This book is very nicely printed with color photos, but I found it very disappointing that citrus fruits were not included in the trees. We moved into a home with 5 types of fruit trees I needed to learn about, and only 1 of our 5 fruit trees are included in this book. If you are looking for citrus fruit care, you will not find it here. The banana tree is also not included.

A great addition to the small farm library.

I would have called this book the "Illustrated Quick Reference" rather than the "Bible." As several other reviewers have pointed out, there are several works with more in-depth information. I think this is a great guide for the novice, and the ample photographs present concepts more clearly than text alone can accomplish. All in all, a great addition to the small farm library​.

She has published forty academic articles and book chapters on the origins of food production, the development of agricultural economies through the Bronze Age and Southern Arabian prehistory. Excellent review of Middle Eastern patterns of pilgrimage/household stability

This book is a comprehensive and insightful analysis of an important but often neglected topic in studies of Middle-Eastern cultures: specifically, the persistence over many millennia of traditions of household organization and functions ("habitus") and pilgrimages in the Arabian Peninsula and adjacent areas.

The author analyzes pilgrimage as it has been practiced during the Muslim era, but also in much earlier times and forms. She defines pilgrimage as "...a journey to a sacred place to participate in a system of sacred beliefs" (p. 19). Prof. McCorriston argues that archaeology and the social sciences have been so narrowly focused on cultural change, that they have not given sufficient attention to stability and continuity in ancient cultures. In considering this issue she addresses fundamental questions about the explanation and understanding of the past in general.

Prof. McCorriston's prose is clear and a pleasure to read, and the book is a model of organization. Her analytical approach is primarily based on post-structuralist concepts and postmodernism in general. This approach, which was derived mainly from contemporary European philosophers, is beginning to have increasing impact on American archaeology. She considers, for example, forms of household activities and pilgrimages to be "Ethnoepochal Meta-Structures." She compares the meta-structures of Arabia and Mesopotamian. The origins and developmen of this epistemological perspective derives from such post-structuralists as Braudel, Bourdieu, Hodder, Giddens, Tilly, et al. Some archaeologists reject this form of interpretation of the archaeological record. Nonetheless, they too will find much of value in this work. The author has carefully researched the physical evidence of thousands of years of pilgrimage in the Middle East and illustrated these data with informative graphs, photographs, drawings and tables. This book should also attract non-academic readers interested in Middle Eastern cultures in general. She enlivens her complex theoretical discussions with anecdotes from her fieldwork and personal interactions with the contemporary Arabians she encountered.

Prof. McCorriston reviews and rejects most previous attempts (e.g., Turner) to explain pilgrimage practices in terms of the functions pilgrimages play in various societies. She discusses in detail, however, the economic activities that are often associated with pilgrimages. Some scholars have argued that interactions between nomadic pastoralists and settled agriculturalists played an important role in initiating the evolution of ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia (Robert McC. Adams), China (Owen Lattimore), and elsewhere. Other functional arguments have related pilgrimage to the benefits of reinforcing the bonds between the individual and his or her larger social and political culture. Evolutionary biologists (e.g., Lewontin) have described the many pitfalls of trying to identify the focus of selection in explaining the physical features and behaviours of our distant ancestors in terms of what "need" was met by the selection for this or that trait. Explaining pilgrimage practices in functional terms involves the same problem. Pilgrimage practices appear to have originated early in human history, long before agriculture and cities appeared, and they continue in most of today's world. To explain and understand this phenomenon's origins (prehistoric gatherings for mate and materials exchange?), however, we have only meager archaeological evidence and arguments based on analogies. We do not know with any precision, for example, if ancient Middle Eastern pilgrimage patterns varied over time in concert with changes in the larger polities in Mesopotamia. But the author has made good use of what little evidence we do have,to try to explain these cultural continuities and traditions.

The author's conception of "Explaining Continuity" (p. 8-10) is an elegant essay. Like most post-structuralists, the author ascribes an independent causal role to ideological elements (cf. Marx) in cultural adaptation and change, while accepting the loose limitations that ecology and historical context places on cultural change. She argues that "...orientation toward meta-structure and long-term continuities supplies a new focus on periods and cultural histories ill-served by the social sciences" (p.234). The "Conclusions" chapter of this book neatly summarizes the problem of connecting meta-structures to the archaeological record. Although Prof. McCorriston's theoretical orientation differs from the positivism and empiricism associated with traditional American archaeology, she provides a lot of "hard" data relevant to her analysis.

This book is far more readable and informative than any book I've read that takes a similar theoretical position. Prof. McCorriston has written a book that should be read by every archaeologists, even those whose geographical focus is different from hers. It is an important contribution to current discussions of archaeological epistemologies.

One of Archer's Better Novels

With this novel, Jeffrey Archer lives up to his billing as a master storyteller. He quickly gets you involved with the story and situation, and makes you believe you are right there in the middle of the novel as one of the characters. Just when you think you have things figured out, he takes a hard turn with an ending you probably won’t see coming. If you have enjoyed Archer’s other books, I believe this one ranks up there with one of his best. I purchased this a while ago for just $2.99 during a Kindle promotion vs. its normal price of $9.99: I certainly believe I received more than $9.99 worth of entertainment value out of this one.

A clever tale by a master storyteller

This was another revisit to a book I had read a while ago prompted by an Amazon deal for a Kindle copy for pocket change. Once again I enjoyed revisiting a book I had enjoyed before and surprisingly there were only a few parts that I really remembered.

There are several parts to a pretty complex plot. At the beginning East-Ender Danny Cartwright proposes to his pregnant girlfriend, Beth Wilson and then goes out with Bernie, Beth's brother and Danny's best mate, to a pub to celebrate. There are four drunken men in the pub and one of them makes obscene suggestions to Beth and then picks a fight with Danny and Bernie. The outcome of the brawl is that Danny is stabbed in the leg by the leader of their opponents who then stabs Bernie fatally.

The twist in the tale is that the leader of the pack, who call themselves "the Musketeers", is an eminent and very clever lawyer who concocts a bogus story that Danny killed his best friend. Danny is arrested for murder and in court the Musketeers stick by their story and Danny is given a life sentence.

Archer then brings his own prison experience into play when he describes prison conditions and the developing personal relationship with his cellmates, especially with Nick Moncrieff, an intelligent and cultured heir to a knighthood who looks uncannily similar to Bernie. Nick helps Bernie to with his education and social skills and they become inseparable. This sets the scene for Danny's determination to seek revenge on each of the Musketeers.

It is a very entertaining story as Danny plots his revenge and as uses his new social and business skills to track down each Musketeer and establish a new life. Jeffrey Archer's books can never be called literary fiction but there are few authors of this genre who can beat him as a master storyteller of complex and entertaining plots.

The story line was good and kept your attention consistently

The story line was good and kept your attention consistently. However, I found it impossible to believe that all the people did not recognize Danny as an imposter. Also impossible to believe was the killer's steps from the murder scene to the bar, to his house, taking clothes off, showering, dressing and returning to the scene to call the police in some seven minutes!

Inspiring and Thought-Provoking

The second book in the Little Britches series is both inspiring and thought provoking. Ralph Moody has a way of connecting with the reader. His narration is simple. He has a very straight-forward way of telling his stories that makes it seem like you are sitting down with him, listening to him tell tales of his childhood over a cup of coffee. The characters in his books come to life in vivid form. Your mind's eye can picture the sheriff with his long drawl, the blacksmith's rugged form, his mother pinching her lip as she puzzles out a problem. As I read of what this family went through after his father's death, how every single one of them pulled together and accomplished amazing things, I wonder if our family could do the same. Would we have the fortitude to bare up under extreme hardship? And not only to bare up, but to do so with contentment and optimism? Ralph and his older sister Grace as well as the younger siblings had to accept grown-up responsibilities at a young age. There was no self-pity or feeling that they were somehow missing out in life. The fruits of their labor were never viewed as individual property, but were given to the good of the whole family. A theme of selflessness and love for each other runs through the book. Though the title is "Man of the Family", the thread that ties it all together is Ralph's mother. Her utter selflessness, her constant labor, her unbelievable cheerfulness in the face of constant worry and struggle, and her deep love for her children and theirs for her is what makes this book so touching. She is a woman of tremendous character--character that leads her to right, even when it is hard, character that she passed on to her children. She inspires them to be all that they can be, and they rise to the occasion and meet the obstacles that life throws at them with cheerfulness and a sense of humor. It truly is amazing what a family can do.

Ralph Moody is once of the best children's authors ever

Ralph Moody is once of the best children's authors ever. I don't know why his books are not more well know. And the books he writes are not just for kids, adults enjoy them too. I loved them all and I just gave the first two to my mother and she loved them! Cameron Beierle is an excellent narrator. He does all the voices and he does a superb job. To me he makes listening to to the books better than reading them and I almost never feel that way. Don't hesitate for a minute,buy these CDs, they will touch you and stay with you in a way few books do!!

Solid advise, but wordy. Some chapters irked me.

This book has solid advise. The premise boils down to this: There are multiple individuals who influence the decision on whether or not to buy from you. First find out out who they are. Then find out how they would personally benefit from your product or service. Get a coach/sponsor to help you out. The book heavy on words and light on content, but the content it does have is important.

The chapter on competition irked me. Their thesis implies that if you focus on their process, competition is irrelevant. That may be the case if you are the one to bring up your product/service to them in the first place. It is not the case if, for example, you are responding to an RFP. I wouldn't mind if they admitted that selling in highly competitive situations is outside of the scope of the book. Instead they insist that their method will work in all situations (implying that you should have been there before an RFP went out to help them design it). That may be true in fantacy land; but in the real world you will only find out about many potential deals after a customer has decided they are going to buy the product/service you offer. They just haven't decided their future vendor. Effective processes and strategies exist to help you win in these situations, and this book does not provide them.

Great book - not much different from original edition

The original is great.

This would be great if it's the first edition you've read.

If you are looking for a lot of new material in the new edition vs. the original I think you will be disappointed. The updates don't justify paying for a new updated book.

That said, I think this is the best complicated sale book I've ever read.

Good to make you think about all types of buyers in a complex sale

Worth a read for anybody thinking about relationship selling. Some good concepts and goof background information. Like all selling books it portrays itself as the best thing since sliced bread but the content and the thinking is made me do helped get over the hype. I would recommend this book and approach to others.

Pioneering Composition Text

I've been teaching writing to college freshmen and secondary students for years. Understanding Rhetoric: A Graphic Guide to Writing gets the Pioneer Award for the first text to use a graphic visual format to reinforce how to write well. The authors and artists put to work their own collaborative processes to create a text that will both educate and entertain young readers. The expert comic visuals support the topics in ways that will really appeal to visual learners. I can still recall the fussy face and piqued posture of Plato as he laments the ill effects that he believes writing will have on thinking and rhetoric. Students will gain a clear understanding of rhetoric, the writing process, and how to persuade an audience through essay writing. The book is a solid classroom text that offers ancillaries, creative assignments, and online helps for both students and instructors. Sure hope the authors will post a "Take a Look Inside" as that option will really attract sales.

Selling the book to some might be tricky though. I will be using the text with a group of seniors in a conservative Christian school setting. In a chapter or two, the authors made the choice to use topics of same gender marriage and research on the gay gene. When covering legitimate research, a fake website called "Savior Science" is used as an example of what is not a reliable source. Jonathan's sexual preference and human rights work are made clear at certain points in the text. I could wish that these weren't there, but I think discussing author choices is important to understanding the effect of the written word. Dialogue will ensue for sure and that's a good thing, especially for young Christians who are learning how to read, think, write and speak sensitively. A gay rights agenda doesn't pervade the text, but certain folks might take offense. I'm going for it because writing in and for the real world is the exciting work of authors,especially Christian ones.

Congratulations to the artists and authors on a groundbreaking book! I hope it wins some awards.

Excellent book, excellent shipping.

A textbook in the form of a comic book. Some may call it crazy, some may say that it's counter intuitive to learning, but I've never seen an entire class actually do the required reading for a class until now. Very good book, and it shipped rapidly, as well.
