A decent update to a great book

I'm torn over how much I like this version of the Disney Character Encyclopedia. I bought my daughter the 2009 edition, but decided to get the updated one to use as an autograph book for our upcoming WDW trip.

Pros:
It includes a lot of the new characters, from Frozen, Planes, Up, and even The Pirate Fairy.
I personally like the clean new style of the pages, particularly the solid band of color on the side with the character's names - it makes it very easy to flip through to the right page.
They removed some of the more obscure characters that I just don't care about (does anyone even remember the names of the "Dinosaurs" characters?)
The hardbound edition is nice, & the book jacket can help keep your book from getting dinged. The pages also seem a little thicker and nicer quality, but that may just be an age issue.

Cons:
My 12yo daughter much prefers the old style, with each character having a font that fits them or their movie style.
The old edition had more fun facts about the characters, including things like their favorite colors, etc. The new version seems like a little bit drier read.
I miss the 2-page spreads for main characters. Especially using this as an autograph book, that extra space was nice.
Some people may be upset about the characters that were removed. There's no page for the Prince from Snow White or most of the Neverland Fairies, both of which are still available for autographs occasionally.
I haven't actually weighed the books, but the new version seems a little heavier. This may not be a problem if you're just using it as a normal book at home, but lugging it around the parks may get cumbersome. (I plan to carry ours in a stroller.)

Overall I like the book and if you don't have access to the older edition I'd definitely say it's worth getting. But honestly I wish they'd found a better compromise between the 2 editions. Ideally I'd combine them and make one that would work better for my purposes. Or better yet, if Disney had made this book with the intention of it being used for autographs and kept all of the older characters from the parks along with the new additions, I would love it.

We used it as an autograph book and couldn't be happier!

Great book, that is very up to date on Disney MOVIE Characters. We bought this book and used it as an autograph book for our daughter on our most recent Disney World trip. Using this book worked out MUCH better than using the generic Disney autograph books we used in the past. The book contains artwork of the characters along with facts based on the movies they appeared in. Only downfall to this book was that it does NOT contain any Disney Television characters, such as Sophia and Doc McStuffin. Still, an outstanding book and worked much better than the flimsy, generic autograph books. I'll recommend this book to all my friends who are planning to go to WDW and seek out autographs.

About the Author
Beverly A. Lewin has extensive experience in teaching scientific writing to Ph.D. students from non - English speaking backgrounds. Since 1980, she has taught students in fields ranging from astronomy to zoology, with the majority in the social sciences. Her own research focuses on scientific discourse, especially genre analysis and managing interpersonal relations in texts (hedging and politeness). Her research on genre analysis is presented in Expository Discourse: A Genre-Based Approach to Social Science Texts (coauthored with Jonathan Fine and Lynne Young, Continuum, 2001) and From Hedging to Heightening: Toning Down and Up in Scientific Texts (Melbourne Papers in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, 2001).

Brief yet comprehensive reference textbook

This book is an excellent resource guide for anyone interested in improving their ability to present scholarly-oriented information in a readable format that conforms to audience expectations and the demands of English. While designed for use in a university writing course, it can also be used for self-study, and is especially helpful for non-native speakers of English. Lewin draws on her extensive teaching experience to craft a relatively short volume that addresses all the critical components of scholarly writing. In a reader-friendly way, Lewin provides a concise review of the constraints of scientific writing, reviews critical grammatical elements, touches on stylistic considerations, and explains each of the major sections of research papers. Additional chapters address the challenges of creating conference papers for oral delivery, writing abstracts, and writing professional letters. Lewin truly covers all the bases. Throughout the chapters, multiple well-chosen examples and occasional practice exercises strengthen the book's value. The author consistently anticipates the kinds of questions and concerns that academic writers will have, and she addresses their needs with humor and compassion. Teachers and students (particularly graduate students) will find this book a very useful textbook or reference tool.

Writing Readable Research

This book is extremely useful as a guide for students in higher education wishing to develop their academic writing. Above all it reflects a deep understanding of how students can gain confidence in communicating about their research with others in the field.

Drawing on her vast experience of practitioner research and a functional linguistic approach, Beverly Lewin has strongly focused on important contextual aspects that underlie the development of good writing but that are little appreciated in mainstream teaching and learning at Higher Education level. Although her book is less than 200 pages long, it systematically covers a great deal of ground positioning key micro-features of English within the range of academic written genres. It engages the reader's awareness to the importance of understanding text purpose so as to make effective language choices by presenting and discussing a rich array of examples in a personable and friendly style.

Readable and Practical

In Writing Readable Research, Beverly Lewin hones in on her many years of expertise in genre-based writing instruction. Using insight both from genre theory/pedagogy and her rich experience in teaching research-based writing to higher education EFL students, Lewin has written a very "readable" guide to writing academic papers. Her concise guidelines, practical tips, and helpful examples are "sprinkled" with hints of humor as she "tells it like it is" to new and not-so-new research-writers. As a doctoral candidate and EFL college writing instructor, I can say that Lewin's book has become one of the fastest-worn books on my bookshelf!

About the Author
Paul M. Kennedy is J. Richardson Dilworth Professor of History at Yale University. He regularly publishes in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times Book Review, the Atlantic, and many other periodicals and scholarly journals. The author of thirteen books, he is perhaps best known for The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers. His most recent publication (2006) is The Parliament of Man: The Past, Present, and Future of the United Nations.

A Disturbing Book, in Many Ways

Without taking a definite position on Mahan or geopolitics,
the book presents British naval power as a textbook example
of how an island nation became first a regional naval power
and then rose to global pre-eminence. The parts about how
the first wave of global trade interacted with the Industrial
Revolution are especially interesting.

It then goes on to describe how a mixture of politics, social
problems, and economic neglect weakened the British Navy, at
a time when newly industrialized countries like Germany,
Japan, and America were becoming stronger.

The end of the story is well known, as two Pyrrhic Victories
against Germany shattered the British Empire in the 20th century.

As an American, I find the description of how Britain in the late
1800s neglected its education system and engaged in trade policies
which destroyed the physical economy to be much too close to home.
This book can be read as a cautionary tale of what could happen to
the United States is we are not careful.

Good review of British naval sea power both it's rise and fall. Easy to understand does not read like a textbook

MISLEADING, BIASED, YET INFORMATIVE.

The title of this book, in my opinion, is misleading. I was expecting Specifications of British Naval Vessels, Research & Development in Vessel Engineering, Naval Strategy, Naval Tactics, Seamen's skill sets & equipment vis-a-vis their main opponents during periods of peace & war etc during the rise & fall of British Naval Mastery. Instead this book was about British Geopolitics & Macro-economics & the British Navy's role within that framework. As interesting as this topic is, I was disappointed because I wanted to read a different book. However, this book does a decent job in addressing what this book is really about, albeit it being biased towards Britain being some kind of Holy Nation. The Author doesn't even mention once the term "Opium War(s)" or "Concentration Camps" which the British invented during the Boer War. The Author comes across as if Britain was doing the whole World some kind of favour by expanding & consolidating her interests. Very little was mentioned that Britain was emulating Portugal's & Holland's lead, they were the real pioneers of Colonialism & International Finance. Give me a break!

I will now succinctly describe Britain's geopolitical strategy during their rise & zenith: Assuming Britain was one of the top three nations in Western Europe, if the number one nation was in conflict with the number two nation, Britain would support the number two nation. If the number two nation was in conflict with the number three nation, Britain would support the number three nation. If the number one nation was in conflict with the number three nation, Britain would support the number three nation. If two out of the top three nations formed an alliance & there was a conflict between them & some other nation(s), Britain would support the weaker nations. While this was going on or not, Britain would expand & consolidate her overseas Empire whilst always either developing the strongest Navy on the planet or maintaining the strongest Navy on the planet. Throw in some skewed diplomacy, an obsession with Naval Blockades & voila, you have an enormous Empire while the rest of Western Europe was too busy asleep at the wheel to realise what was going on, even though they themselves were losing colonies all around the World to Britain. If you are wondering, how did they afford all this, the answer is that they had a very small Army, constructing vessels was not as expensive as in modern times, they invented Central Banking in 1694, the public accepted fiat currency once it was introduced & no nation came even close to them in the magnitude of international trade once they got to the zenith. Pretty simple if you ask me & you probably do not need to read the book anymore.

On the positive side, this book is well written, broken up in chapters that are logical i.e. the different periods during the rise, zenith & fall of the British Empire. Some interesting tables in regards to nation comparisons, vessels, macro-economic data etc during different periods. The improving & then decline in Britain's macro-economy is also well described, discussing inflation, national debt, trade deficits/surpluses & comparisons with other nations. For the Naval Strategists out there, the Author does sprinkle Mahan & Mackinder throughout this book, however I found it superficial & it left me wanting more. The Author also gets into the pivotal agreements over a short period of time which secured American hegemony, the passing of the baton, if you wish. Thank you Mr Kennedy for your contribution in this field, even though the title of your book was misleading & you are biased.

About the Author
Patricia Highsmith (1921–95) won the O. Henry Award for her first published short story, "The Heroine." Her 22 novels and eight collections of short stories include such well-known books as Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Highsmith engaged in sexual relationships with women as well as men, and The Price of Salt is regarded as highly autobiographical.

Worth the price...

This edition by Norton republishing Patricia Highsmith's second novel, The Price of Salt, or Carol as later titled by the author, is worth its higher price than the other Kindle editions available that are fraught with typos and amateurish typesetting. I imagine most who are checking out reviews here have either already seen the movie Carol (based on the book) or plan to see the movie yet wish to read the book first. I had already read an earlier edition of The Price of Salt prior to seeing the movie recently. I'm glad I've invested in this Norton edition as it includes interesting and informative commentary from Highsmith shedding light into the backstory of her writing the novel mid-20th century in the first place.

For me, reading the book and experiencing the movie are a complete package. Like two persons who belong together, words well written and images well framed can be better appreciated than partaking of one without the other.

In terms of the novel, Highsmith's prose does a wonderful job of developing its characters, particularly the character Therese who is the story's protagonist. The novel is clearly written from Therese's point of view. It is a coming-of-age story about Therese and her experiences that lead her to falling in love with an older woman, Carol, who is in the midst of getting a divorce. Carol is torn between her love for her daughter, named Rindy, and her attraction and growing romantic love for Therese that puts Carol's relationship with her young daughter at risk. It is a dark story at times fraught with immense tensions and conflicts acutely felt but forcibly suppressed by certain characters as it takes place within the early 1950s. Such is a a time when same-sex attraction was considered both pathological and criminal if acted upon, and the novel's dialogue and narrative must be seen within this repressed societal context of the day. The novel is quite revolutionary for its time, carrying a somewhat ambiguous though positive ending for the two women in love rather than the typical tragic one, and the story continues to be relevant even today. The movie, as brilliantly directed and supurbly acted by all of its cast, and with its own rich historically accurate reproduction and visualization, has a few changes to the original plot that for me, work. I would say if you read the novel before seeing the movie, you will experience the movie more as an insider who recognizes these changes as something complimentary to Highsmith's story. By watching the movie, you can appreciate having greater insight into Carol's part within the story.

All said, the novel Carol is a worthy read for anyone who wants to read a complex yet ultimately uplifting love story that happens to be between two women who do not fit into the stereotypes for lesbian relationships of any period.

Two Out of Three!

Sections ONE and THREE were excellent! Section ONE reviews the science and Section THREE attempts to integrate MIND and CONSCIOUSNESS into the genetic equation. In my opinion, these are the areas where the authors shine. Dr. Tanzi is a geneticist
and Dr. Chopra is a philosopher focused on the Unity of Life.

Section TWO -- the practical lifestyle advice -- in my opinion was weak. As far as I know, neither of the authors and currently in
private practice, working with a large number of patients. I found the advice too general and limited. As a clinician, I didn't think they
had the necessary power to match the possibilities that the rest of the book makes available.

Still ... an important work ... and I am glad they wrote it!

Get the book if you want to improve your body and mind

I heard about this book on Conan he had deepak chopra talk about it. I am not someone special by any means i put fuel in trucks for a window company thats my job. But this guy made my brain click if you have a understanding about things a average person wouldn't even think about get this book it might change your life by opening your mind because it makes sense. When i talk to my family about something similar they look at me like your nuts and half retard. But anyways i dont explain myself very well sometimes i sound like i need to go back to school I've been told. So starting on one improvement i need to quit talking about myself. Get the book

Disappointed

This was a lot of fluff - I am a health care professional, so I do appreciate research studies backing things up, but I felt like there was just too much rambling and not enough solid information here. Yes, probiotics are good, we already know this. I didn't read this expecting to gain some huge new revelation, but I felt like I wasted my money on it. Deepak seems to be recycling his ideas a lot lately and I didn't learn anything new. Meditate, eat well, take a probiotic. There you go, the book in 10 words or less.
