Intelligent MR safety . Comprehensive, but comprehendable

This is a uniquely practical and comprehensive compilation of authoritative and well referenced perspectives and information of MR safety topics which impact all Clinical and research MRI operations.
The editors have both been active researchers, practitioners and educators since the beginnings of clinical MRI in the early 1980's, and they have exploited their unparalleled understanding and their connections to recruit a pool of over forty authors of quality from around the globe, who know how to think, and write clearly.
The 31 chapters, begin by covering the foundation physics, of MR bio effects Dr. Ness-Avier frames the discussion with an explanation of the imaging physics, leading to six chapters exploring the detail and current evidence on interactions with the static, gradient, and RF fields, by Drs. Kangarlu, McRobbie, Schaefer. Extra chapters explore the heating effects of RF (Dr Shellock) , and the hazards of Acoustic Noise exposure (Dr McJury), reflecting the frequency with which these effects are cited in reports of injury in human scanning.
Site design is a critical issue identified in root cause analysis of many significant MR incidents, and the inclusion of a chapter by experienced Health facility architect R. Junk provides a coherent discussion of site design principles and standards. This novel inclusion acts as evidence to managers, and others, who's expertise lies outside MRI, that the MR professional's requirements for specific site design elements are required to provide the foundations for other procedural safety practices designed to ensure staff and public safety.
The headline issues of MR safety in the current decade are clearly addressed in expert chapters. The text concludes with a string of quite unique chapters documenting jurisdictional variations of approach to equipment, patient and staff exposure standards in the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia, The authors of these final 6 chapters (Keevil, McRobbie, Brown, Kainz, Smith) blend rigorous accounts of scientific evidence, a high level of accurate referencing to current regulations, through their work to demonstrate the delicate balance needed between public perception of risk and the response to uncertainty, and the realistic scientific consideration of levels of concern, particularly in light of the demonstrated value MRI has delivered in its relatively short history as a medical imaging tool.
