About the Author

Bernard Kolman received his BS in mathematics and physics from Brooklyn College in 1954, his ScM from Brown University in 1956, and his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965, all in mathematics. He has worked as a mathematician for the US Navy and IBM. He has been a member of the mathematics department at Drexel University since 1964, and has served as Acting Head of the department. His research activities have included Lie algebra and perations research. He belongs to a number of professional associations and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Mu Epsilon, and Sigma Xi.

Robert C. Busby received his BS in physics from Drexel University in 1963, his AM in 1964 and PhD in 1966, both in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. He has served as a faculty member of the mathematics department at Drexel since 1969. He has consulted in applied mathematics and industry and government, including three years as a consultant to the Office of Emergency Preparedness, Executive Office of the President, specializing in applications of mathematics to economic problems. He has written a number of books and research papers on operator algebra, group representations, operator continued fractions, and the applications of probability and statistics to mathematical demography.

Sharon Cutler Ross received a SB in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965, an MAT in secondary mathematics from Harvard University in 1966, and a PhD in mathematics from Emory University in 1976. She has taught junior high, high school, and college mathematics, and has taught computer science at the collegiate level. She has been a member of the mathematics department at DeKalb College. Her current professional interests are in undergraduate mathematics education and alternative forms of assessment. Her interests and associations include the Mathematical Association of America, the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges, and UME Trends. She is a member of Sigma Xi and other organizations.

Poor book

I used this as the primary text in a University Math/Programming course. The book is very dry and hard to read. While the information in the text is correct, it is hard to imagine a more uninteresting and dry way to present the material. Pseudo code was unnecessarily difficult to understand. Same goes for the main math concepts, which often had to be explained at length by the instructor.

Terrible book!

I agree with others that this book does a very poor job explaining things to non-math majors. This textbook was definitely written by math majors for math majors, but most of us who are required to take this course are doing it for an IT or similar degree path. Luckily Google and YouTube have been able to teach me what this book couldn't not so I'm doing well in the class. I just can't attribute it to this text book.

I bought this book from another vendor, but felt compelled to give some feedback here. I find the lessons in this textbook very difficult to follow - I feel like there is a lot of detail missing. I am a math major in my senior year and have taken many higher level math courses. I have never had such a hard time understanding a textbook. I have given up on reading this book and turned to Google so many times during this course that I wonder why my school chose to use this text. The explanations I find online are so much more straightforward. It's very frustrating. I am very disappointed with my schools choice to use this book.

About the Author
Douglas Soccio was professor of philosophy at Shasta College for nearly 30 years. In addition to ARCHETYPES OF WISDOM: AN INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY, 8E, he is the author of HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF PHILOSOPHY, and, with Vincent E. Barry, PRACTICAL LOGIC, all of which are published by Wadsworth. For three years he wrote a weekly philosophy column for the REDDING RECORD SEARCHLIGHT. Now devoted to writing on a full-time basis, he is presently developing a collection of philosophical stories that express what he describes as "philosophy with a heart" a generous notion of philosophy that infuses all of his writing.

The Missing Link in our Culture - Logic!

Brilliant, engaging, well-written, informative. I took Logic in Jr. College w/Mr. Soccio as the instructor using this book as text, and after losing my copy I wanted to have one handy. If you want to learn more about how to think - not what to think, but how to use your brain to cut through the fluff and distractions we face every day from the media and in our lives - this book is the real deal. It should be required reading for everyone with a brain IMHO.

Not worth $247.00 of course - but you can find it other places at a more sane (logical!) price.

ambiguous and contraditory

While the thoughts expressed helped to improve critical thinking, too much was left open for debate. A book of this nature should not be left open to such broad interpretation and the words chosen or researched so that multiple meanings are not prevelant.

This third volume in the highly successful Oxford Guides to Chaucer series offers a much-needed introduction to Chaucer's Shorter Poems. A general chapter on the social and cultural contexts of the Shorter Poems is followed by a guide to the main genre which they exemplify - the love-vision form. The volume then provides individual chapters on the Book of the Duchess, the House of Fame, the Parliament of Fowls, the Legend of Good Women, and the short poems; there is also an extensive appendix on Chaucer's language. The views of critics who wrote over fifty years ago are interwoven with recently published ones: scholarship on dates and sources is combined with contemporary theoretical approaches, literary history of a traditional kind with now-current historicist approaches, and medieval hermeneutics with modern. Introducing Chaucer, the volume maintains, must entail the presentation of diverse methods of reading Chaucer.

About the Author
Publications include (with A. B. Scott) Medieval Literary Theory and Criticism c.1100-c.1375 (OUP, 1988 pb 1991). He is also under contract with OUP for a study of Chaucer's Preachers. Minnis is the General Editor of the Cambridge Studies in Medieval Literature, published by CUP.

Reading level correction.

This is a scholarly work, in a series of three books covering Chaucer's *Canterbury Tales* and *Troilus & Criseyde,* by distinguished scholars. To describe it as on a "Baby/Preschool" reading level is utter nonsense. This mistaken label should be removed at once.
