TIME OF EXILE is the concluding volume of Gaither Stewart's Europe Trilogy. The long and complex story begins with The Trojan Spy and continues with the second volume, Lily Pad Roll. As both participant and observer of the events, an aspiring young journalist, Karl Heinz, comes to understand the world of ideology and espionage and becomes a major link between all three novels. Lily Pad Roll shows the development of America's network of military bases throughout the world, especially those encircling its arch enemy Russia. In military jargon, a lily pad means a kind of outpost or staging area, in fact a new kind of military base, scaled down from the major bases one finds in Germany and Italy. As they move across Europe from Munich to Belgrade, Istanbul, Odessa and Moscow, a new character emerges, Elmer Redway-a prefigurement of Edward Snowden-demonstrating once again how fiction can sometimes precede real events. Redway, hacker genius and whistleblower, deserts from the US military in East Europe and provides top secret information to the world media. Elmer thus becomes the exile, hunted by western intelligence services and living a life under false identities. He is protected by an underground rat line as he continues to expose the true nature of world events. This is his story.

... Stewart's final volume in the Europe trilogy is the best of the lot

There is no surprise that Gaither Stewart's final volume in the Europe trilogy is the best of the lot. His long awaited prose is carefully crafted to evoke a sense of loss and fear that an expatriate or more adequately an "exile" can only experience-- something vividly real in Stewart which hovers over the surface of the book. Stewart is the exile and chooses to defend his literary life with this volume.
His exposure of recent political crimes against humanity and the absolute slash and burn politics of western imperialism across the globe are certainly not incidental. And,WE are actors in this debacle of loss just as Elmer Redway is its catalyst.
All good novels set before the protagonist a choice. Choose the right thing (we hardly even have an idea what that means anymore) or join the herd of jackals and continue to bring humanity down to the Hobbesian level until it disappears (Social Darwinism).
Sartre wrote about WWII and the post-war period as a continual series of choices which will define the future and ourselves. Even if you choose to not choose there is no escape. The reluctance to choose, which gradually brought about the horrors of Nazi Germany and eventually to the strife of the world today is the ultimate choice. Doing the right thing-- making a choice for the good even if it means your life is the message. Enter Edward Snowden and his choices.
In literature, it is the same. The protagonist and antagonist consciously or unconsciously choose a path which leads to either further destruction or a denouement which sustains some semblance of sanity.
In the entirety of this trilogy, I have traveled around the world and back many times. I am Elmer Redway and Nikitin. I have been guided by Stewart and his trilogy
I am sorry this trilogy is over but I have gained much from Stewart and his cast of characters. I CHOOSE to do the right thing.

Gaither Stewart has become one of my favorite authors. He manages to integrate history into his works while fully engaging me. My late husband would be thrilled - I have an aversion to History as a topic; yet love to learn the "why's" of the world.
In this trilogy, while the story is of one man's awakening and adventure, every character is so well developed you feel you are in the moment with real people, not watching a one dimensional film. That is Gaither's true art, I suppose, his writing envelops you into a world - like dreaming in technicolor with surround sound. You are THERE.
The political commentary is strong, without preachiness - just a candid look at the play and the players. One cannot help but have their eyes opened, while their pulse races.
From the 1st page of the 1st book, to the last of this epic finale - I was immersed and in love with the story. I read it in e-form, and had to order the hard copies to have forever.

Time of Exile

Time of Exile is the third novel, bringing to an end with a climatic conclusion Gaither Stewart's Europe Trilogy. The first two novels, The Trojan Spy and Lily Pad Roll, form a tandem, leading up to this last novel, perhaps his best to date.
The exciting story line is full of action, and the reader enters into the minds of the various main characters. Coming from different directions and worlds, each character aspires to do the right thing, not only in life, but also for the world as a whole. The poet John Keats, who is buried in Rome's Poet's Cemetery, had similar thoughts. It probably not a coincidence that Stewart has chosen the cemetery as one of the places where action takes place.
The reader will not be disappointed in this last novel of the trilogy.
