About the Author
Dan Woodske is the owner and brewer of the Beaver Brewing Company in Beaver Falls Pennsylvania. He has worked in politics, sales, marketing, community development and as a janitor...somehow all of this experience turned him into a nanobrewer.

Poor Effort

Nanobrewery USA appears to be a phoned in effort. The meat of the book is a listing of nanobreweries throughout America. Brewery listings include contact information, production volume, and hours. Most breweries have information about their brewing system and a couple of beers included. For the most part, these entries are pretty good. Several entries simply state that the brewery owners could not be contacted and are left blank or uses unquoted online reviews of the brewery and it's beers. This is the strongest section of the book.
Unfortunately, there is little else in the book besides the 75 or so brewery listings. I was hoping for a much larger discussion about why nanobreweries are proliferating and what their struggles are. The book only contains about ten pages of discussion about what a nano is and why they're different. The subtitle of A Chronicle of the American Nanobrewery Craft Beer Phenomena is overly bold for as shallow as the content is. I expected a richer set of topics and depth from someone who has owned a nano for several years now.

Good enough(for the price)

DW does a decent job of picking out some cool hideways for you to check out, without you having to spend hours on the internet googling 'nano' or 'craft beer', and he does it at a low cost. I've already locked in a half dozen places in the PNW that I will be checking out (if they are still in business this fall). Don't go crazy about the frame builds on kindle - they weren't 100% perfect, but it wasn't obnoxious or distracting.

Small can be beautiful!

The author argues that smaller breweries are more adventurous, more creative and more willing to experiment thatn larger breweries. His fascinating leads for "smaller-than-micro-breweries" with descriptions of their best products and contact information. It can be used to plan a large scale, long term "pub crawl," especially if your on the east or west coast where most of the entries are located.
