Highly Recommend!

This book was a great read. I was interested to read it because my husband has Native American ancestors. Also, being a former ESL teacher, I was interested to read it because the synopsis reminded me of the challenges some of my teacher friends had encountered when they ventured to third-world countries to teach English. The stories recounted in this book go beyond any of the challenges my ESL colleagues faced…and this was Canada.
Phillips does a fantastic job making the reader feel as if he/she is right there, living her experiences as a teacher in one of Canada’s most remote and desolate Native American reservations. In the beginning one of her teacher friends warns, “look after yourself because nobody else will do it for you here.” Somehow, she manages to live an entire school year there, in the “desolation, poverty, and depression” (the writer’s words) of the Reserve. (I, myself, would have hopped the first plane out of there and gone home!)
At the end I felt like I had completed the journey through that year with her. We all have had tough experiences in our lives that have made us a stronger person and who we are today. In this story, we can all find elements of our own personal journeys. Hillary Phillips has created a terrific book - an inspiring story of commitment and resolve. I highly recommend this book!

Wonderfully written, heartfelt and utterly captivating

When the description offered a fast paced page turner, it was not kidding! This is one of those stories that grabs your hand and takes you along for a roller coaster ride. Hillary Phillips offers you an intimate look into her life, and in doing so introduces you to another world, one many of us aren't even aware still exists. Truly her story is one of a kind.
More than just her story, she shares tales from others as well. From Wanda taping her husband's money to the ceiling so he wouldn't spend it on booze to Jim picking lice off a kid so he could gross the teachers out, there's never a dull moment. Hillary is exactly the sort of person you'd want for a teacher, and her students genuinely like her. Her generosity and kindness allow her to see the beauty beneath the squalor, and she helps you to see it as well. What I liked most though was that throughout it all she remained strong and positive, and continued to grow as a person. Wonderfully written, heartfelt and utterly captivating, "Teacher" is a book that will stay with me for a long time.

Incredible tale of a real life adventure

I read primarily fiction but I am often amazed that some of the best stories that I do come across are either entirely true or based on fact. Laura Hillenbrand's "Unbroken" comes to mind. And now I can add author Hillary Phillips' "Teacher" to that list. In her memoir, Phillips recounts her adventures on the remote First Nations Reserves in Northern Canada where she spent a year teaching. While living through and witnessing some very harsh conditions and heart wrenching experiences, her story telling superbly puts the reader right there with her and left me inspired and moved. This was a wonderful book that gave me a glimpse into a world and a culture that I really knew nothing about before. Well done.
