The final work was written by a later author as a supposed addition to Hesiod's Catalogue of Women, and relates the fight between Heracles and a son of Ares, with a lengthly description of the wondrous shield Heracles carries with him.
Written around 700 BC, the first two works represent some of the earliest Greek literature, preceded only by Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.
